Simone and Martine are usherettes in a porno cinema in Montparnasse. Installed in the limbic hall, they greet regulars and people passing through, put people in their place, and pass the time chatting. Inspired by the biography of Marie-Claude Treilhou, who in her youth worked to support herself in a porn cinema alongside the explosive Ingrid Bourgoin, who we find in the film as Simone Barbès, this is the best-known work of the French director. A journey in three acts between the interior and exterior, darkness and artificial lights, in which the bizarre cinema and the city that surrounds it constantly dialogue and even seem to invert each other. In this nocturnal Paris, suspended between Eustache's cinema and the 1980s camp aesthetic that inspired so much of French cinema to come, Simone and Martine survive thanks to their boundless humour and exceptional vitality.

Born in 1948, she is a French director and actress. After obtaining a degree in Philosophy and Art History, she wrote for several magazines, such as "Cinéma" and "Art press" from 1974 to 1977; she was a stagiaire and pupil of Paul Vecchiali and she worked as his assistant on many films, including Corps à cœur in 1978. In the meantime, she also worked as a saleswoman, delivery girl, cashier and usher in the cinemas to earn a living; that eclectic career gave her inspiration for her first feature film, Simone Barbès ou la vertu, acclaimed by the critics in 1980. She has also taught Documentary Film at the Ateliers Varan. Always faithful to the style of her mentor Vecchiali and to the line drawn by the Diagonale production company, she has always navigated on the borderline between fiction and documentary, claiming an engaged and low-budget cinema with often non-professional actors. Her most famous works are: Le jour des rois, with an extraordinary rich cast composed by famous faces from French cinema (Danielle Darrieux, Paulette Dubost, Micheline Presle, Robert Lamoureux and Michel Galabru), Il été une fois la télé, Une sale histoire de sardines and Un petit cas de conscience, the latter with Claire Simon, Dominique Cabrera and Alain Guiraudie.
