Geneviève gestisce con sua madre un negozio di ombrelli. È innamorata di Guy, un giovane meccanico, ma sua madre sogna per lei un matrimonio con un ricco commerciante di diamanti. Intanto però scoppia la guerra d'Algeria e Guy viene inviato al fronte.
Michel Legrand mette in musica Jacques Demy, dialoghista geniale: insieme firmano un mélo interamente cantato, in cui ogni battuta di dialogo è melodia, ogni emozione è armonizzata, mentre la facciata pastello e i colori primari saturi celano una descrizione minuziosa del dramma amoroso. I sentimenti sono vincolati dalla classe sociale, dalla geografia e dalla storia con la S maiuscola: la guerra d'Algeria non è sullo sfondo, ma una linea di frattura che separa gli amanti e sostituisce il desiderio con il dovere. Geneviève e Guy sono protagonisti di un musical che non fa evadere ma diventa evocativo di una gabbia, fuori dalle illusioni.

Geneviève runs an umbrella shop with her mother. She is in love with Guy, a young auto mechanic, but her mother dreams of her to be married with a wealthy diamond merchant. But the Algerian War breaks out, and the army calls up Guy.
Michel Legrand sets Jacques Demy’s genius words to music: together, they craft a fully sung melodrama in perfect harmony, where every line of dialogue is sung, every emotion is harmonised, and in the meantime the pastel façades and the saturated primary colours hide a precise anatomy of heartbreak. Feelings are limited by social class, geography, and historical rupture: the Algerian War is not a backdrop but a fault line that separates lovers and replaces desire with duty. Geneviève and Guy are protagonists of a musical that does not make characters evade but becomes the evocation of a trap, outside illusion.

Cineasta al tempo stesso dentro e fuori dalla Nouvelle Vague, era uno sperimentatore di generi, ed è ritenuto uno dei più importanti registi di musical di tutti i tempi. Da Lola (1961) a Les parapluies de Cherbourg (Palma d’Oro a Cannes nel 1964 e candidato ai Premi Oscar per la colonna sonora poco tempo dopo) e Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), ha creato un universo chiuso governato dal caso, dalla musica e dal desiderio, dove l'artificio diventa una forma di verità. Nato nel 1931 e sposato con la regista Agnès Varda, ha ricevuto riedizioni e retrospettive anche molti anni dopo la sua morte avvenuta prematuramente nel 1990.

Filmmaker at once within and apart from the Nouvelle Vague, he was an experimentalist of genres, and he’s considered one of the most important musical directors of all time. From Lola (1961) to Les parapluies de Cherbourg (Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1964 and nominated for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards afterwards) and Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), Demy built a closed universe governed by chance, music, and desire, where artifice becomes a mode of truth. Born in 1931 and married to the director Agnès Varda, he received re-issues and retrospectives even many years after his premature death in 1990.
