Nantes, 1955, durante lo sciopero ai cantieri navali: François, un giovane operaio, ed Édith, infelice moglie di un venditore di televisori, si innamorano. Ma con l’aggravarsi delle tensioni sociali dovute allo sciopero, François si ritroverà diviso tra i suoi ideali e i suoi sentimenti.
Con Une chambre en ville, Jacques Demy torna alla tragedia lirica che ha reso Les Parapluies de Cherbourg un capolavoro senza tempo. Ma qui i colori sono più cupi, la musica più funerea e il destino più inesorabile. Mentre la colonna sonora di Michel Colombier sostituisce il calore melodico di Michel Legrand, Demy sfoga la sua ossessione per i meccanismi del destino, che sembra coreografo tanto quanto il regista, facendo scivolare la macchina da presa come una danzatrice per farla arrestare come con un colpo di pistola. Colore, costumi e architetture non sono semplici sfondi, sono topografie emozionali.

Nantes, 1955, during a shipyard strike: François, a young worker, and Édith, the unhappy wife of a television salesman, fall in love. As social tensions worsen because of the strike, François is torn between his ideals and his feelings.
With Une chambre en ville, Jacques Demy returns to the lyrical tragedy that made Les Parapluies de Cherbourg an enduring masterpiece. But here the colors are darker, the music more anguished, and the fate more inexorable. While Michel Colombier's score eschews the melodic warmth of Michel Legrand, Demy exploits his obsession with the mechanics of fate, which looks like as much a choreograph as the director, making the camera slow as a dancer and making it stop as with a gunshot. Color, costume, and architecture are not mere backdrops, they are emotional topographies.

Cineasta al tempo stesso dentro e fuori dalla Nouvelle Vague, era uno sperimentatore di generi, ed è ritenuto uno dei più importanti registi di musical di tutti i tempi. Da Lola (1961) a Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (Palma d’Oro a Cannes nel 1964 e candidato ai Premi Oscar per la colonna sonora poco tempo dopo) e Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), ha creato un universo chiuso governato dal caso, dalla musica e dal desiderio, dove l'artificio diventa una forma di verità. Nato nel 1931 e sposato con la regista Agnès Varda, ha ricevuto riedizioni e retrospettive anche molti anni dopo la sua morte avvenuta prematuramente nel 1990.

Filmmaker at once within and apart from the Nouvelle Vague, he was an experimentalist of genres, and he’s considered one of the most important musical directors of all time. From Lola (1961) to Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1964 and nominated for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards afterwards) and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), Demy built a closed universe governed by chance, music, and desire, where artifice becomes a mode of truth. Born in 1931 and married to the director Agnès Varda, he received re-issues and retrospectives even many years after his premature death in 1990.
