Il padre di una famiglia molto povera ruba i risparmi nascosti sotto il materasso e scappa dalla finestra. La madre lo insegue inviperita fino al museo dove l’uomo si è rifugiato. Al museo li attende una sorpresa inattesa…
Otar Ioseliani girò Akvarel durante i suoi studi al VGIK, l’istituto cinematografico di Mosca. In questo cortometraggio sperimentò il montaggio verticale e il montaggio ritmico, e per ogni inquadratura si ispirò alla pittura classica. Grazie ad un lavoro estremamente meticoloso e controllato, senza dubbio influenzato dalla sua formazione musicale e matematica, il film raggiunge una precisione ritmica assoluta. E intanto filosofia ed estetica dei lavori futuri del grande regista georgiano si delineano già: il film è una riflessione poetica e umanista in cui l’arte e la musica, il tempo per vivere, osservare e pensare, occupano un posto centrale.

The father of a very poor family steals the household savings hidden under the mattress and escapes through the window. The mother furiously chases after him all the way to the museum where the man has taken refuge. At the museum, they are about to face an unexpected surprise... Otar Ioseliani filmed Akvarel during his studies at VGIK, the film institute in Moscow. In this film he experimented with vertical editing and rhythmic editing, getting inspiration from classical painting for each frame. Through an extremely meticulous and controlled process, no doubt influenced by his background in music and mathematics, the film shows an absolute rhythmic precision. And in the meantime philosophy and aesthetic of the great Georgian director become evident: the movie is a poetic and humanist reflection in which art and music, the time to live, to observe, and to think, hold a central place.

Regista nato a Tbilisi nel 1934, ha studiato musica e matematica prima di iscriversi alla scuola di cinema VGIK di Mosca, dove fu allievo di Alexander Dovzhenko. I suoi primi lavori, come Aprili (1961) e La caduta delle foglie (1966), si contraddistinguono per il realismo poetico e la critica velata alla società sovietica. Insofferente alla censura, si trasferì in Francia all’inizio degli anni ’80, dove ottenne successo internazionale con film satirici come I favoriti della luna (1984), premiato a Venezia con il Premio Speciale della Giuria. Celebre per i suoi lunghi piani sequenza, l’uso minimo del dialogo e il tono ironico, i suoi film esplorano spesso l’assurdità della vita moderna e il conflitto tra tradizione e progresso. Muore a Tbilisi nel 2023.

Film director, born in 1934 in Tbilisi, he studied music and mathematics before enrolling at the VGIK film school in Moscow, where he had Alexander Dovzhenko as a teacher. His early works, such as Aprili (1961) and Falling Leaves (1966), were noted for their poetic realism and subtle criticism of Soviet society. Frustrated by censorship, Ioseliani moved to France in the early 1980s, where he gained international acclaim for his satirical films including Favorites of the Moon (1984), which won a Special Jury Prize at Venice. Known for long takes, minimal dialogue, and a whimsical tone, his films often explore the absurdities of modern life and the clash between tradition and progress. He died in Tbilisi in 2023.
