Taiwan, Anni Settanta. In un programma tv si tiene un dibattito fra alcuni giovani a proposito di moralità, globalizzazione, Est e Ovest del mondo e ideologie politiche. È l’occasione opportuna per un girotondo frastornante di sketch che immaginano tavole rotonde di dittatori e lezioni di etica da parte di un’intelligenza artificiale.
Questo e altro è The Trio Hall, la velenosa satira di Su Hui-yu, tratta da una sua omonima performance del 2023. Se da un lato il film prende a pugnalate violente i modi ipocriti e ridicoli in cui nel presente così come nel passato ci appelliamo ai massimi sistemi per giustificare le nostre (a)moralità, dall’altro lato esplora con un ritmo forsennato le possibilità del travestitismo e dell’alterità, come in un circo delirante che spazza via ogni certezza.

Taiwan, the Seventies. In a tv program a debate is held among some young people concerning the themes of morality, globalization, East and West of the world and political ideologies. It’s the perfect occasion for a dazing merry-go-round of sketches that fantasize about roundtables with dictators and ethical lessons from an artificial intelligence.
This and many other things is The Trio Hall, the venomous satire by Su Hui-yu, based on a homonymous performance from 2023. On one side the movie violently stabs the ridiculous and hypocrite ways we use (and used in the past as well) high philosophical concepts to justify our (a)morality, and on the other side it explores the chances of transvestitism and alterity with a mad rhythm, as in a foolish circus that washes away all the certainties.

Dopo aver frequentato un Master di Belle Arti presso la National University of Arts di Taipei nel 2003 e aver realizzato diverse attività nella scena dell’arte contemporanea, il regista e artista si è fatto conoscere in giro per il mondo presentando i suoi cortometraggi a Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand, Singapore, BAFICI, Frameline e Karlovy Vary. Tra il 2009 e il 2021 ha vinto diversi premi in alcuni festival asiatici. The Trio Hall, presentato nella sezione Forum della Berlinale 2025, è il suo primo lungometraggio.

With a MFA at the Taipei National University of Arts in 2003 and many activities in the contemporary arts scene, he became known all around the world as director and artist, presenting his short films in Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand, Singapore, BAFICI, San Francisco’s Frameline and Karlovy Vary. Between 2009 and 2021 he won various prizes in some Asian film festivals. The Trio Hall, screened for the first time in the Forum section of Berlinale 2025, is his first feature-length film.
