«Quattro medici su cinque raccomandano l’astinenza sessuale per gli uomini gay!», «I buoni gay sono monogami e assimilabili agli etero». La retorica eteronormativa usa la crisi dell’AIDS per demonizzare la sessualità queer. A.I.D.S.C.R.E.A.M., il primo capitolo della Aids Trilogy di Jerry Tartaglia, che nella sua opera ha instancabilmente associato la pratica sperimentale alla coscienza politica queer, è una risposta rabbiosa al fenomeno politico della malattia e un ricordo dei suoi amici scomparsi. L’associazione tra sesso, peccato e morte o quella tra medicina e morale che attraversano le retoriche ultrareligiose e bigotte dell’epoca sono decostruite attraverso immagini e suoni che non si limitano alla denuncia, ma rileggono e ribaltano la stessa narrazione epidemica. Tartaglia celebra la sessualità queer, descritta come un virus e un pericolo dalla cultura eteropatriarcale.

A.I.D.S.C.R.E.A.M., the first chapter of The AIDS Trilogy by Jerry Tartaglia, who has relentlessly linked experimental practice with queer political awareness in his work, is a raging response to the politics of the disease and a tribute to his dead friends. The association between sex, sin and death or that between medicine and morality that run through the ultra-religious and bigoted rhetoric of the time are deconstructed through images and sounds that do not limit to denunciation, but reinterpret and overturn the epidemic narrative itself. Tartaglia celebrates queer sexuality, described as a virus and a danger by hetero-patriarchal culture.

Regista e autore il cui lavoro nel cinema sperimentale e queer attraversa cinque decenni. La sua opera è influenzata dai film di Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas e Gregory Markopoulos. È stato il primo, nel 1977, a scrivere della sensibilità gay nel cinema d'avanguardia statunitense. Il suo lavoro è spesso legato all’analisi dell'identità gay e la politica queer. A partire dal 1990, sette dei suoi film sono stati presentati in anteprima alla Berlinale. La sua AIDS Trilogy, realizzata all'inizio dell'epidemia negli Stati Uniti, è stata proiettata in tutto il mondo. Nel 1993 ha partecipato alla creazione del simbolo del nastro rosso per la lotta all'AIDS all’interno dell'Artists' Caucus di Visual AIDS di New York. Dall'inizio degli anni '90, ha lavorato al restauro e alla conservazione dell'eredità cinematografica di Jack Smith e in seguito ha prodotto un lungometraggio sul suo lavoro, Escape From Rented Island: The Lost Paradise of Jack Smith (2017).

Filmmaker and writer whose work in experimental film and queer cinema spans five decades. His work cites influences such as the work of Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas, and Gregory Markopoulos. He was the first to write about the gay sensibility in American avant-garde film (1977) and his work is an ongoing examination of gay identity and queer politics. Seven of his films have been premiered at the Berlinale since 1990. In 1993 he took part in the creation of the Red Ribbon as a symbol of AIDS awareness through the Artists' Caucus of Visual AIDS in NYC. Since the early 1990s, he has worked on restoring and preserving the film legacy of Jack Smith and later produced a feature length film concerning Smith’s body of work, Escape From Rented Island: The Lost Paradise of Jack Smith (2017).
