Anthem è un video sperimentale e musicale che unisce le voci di cinque poeti afroamericani, i cui versi si susseguono non linearmente tra scomposizione e ripetizione, a immagini di danza, scene sensuali e simboli politici, come la bandiera panafricana, il triangolo rosa di Act Up, il motto Silenzio = Morte.
La musica ritmata scandisce i livelli simbolici dell’opera, che, attraverso un gioco di associazioni visive, rivendica il valore politico dell’utopia, immagina una liberazione queer e annuncia una nuova idea di mascolinità. Marlon Riggs, il cui lavoro a metà tra attivismo e videoarte ha testimoniato l’impatto dell’AIDS nella comunità afroamericana, tesse un’ode all’amore tra uomini, celebra i movimenti queer e la lotta all'HIV e invita a una rivoluzione intersezionale.

Anthem is an experimental and musical video that combines the voices of five African-American poets, whose verses alternate non-linearly between fragmentation and repetition, with images of dance, sensual scenes and political symbols, such as the Pan-African flag, the pink triangle of Act Up, the slogan Silence = Death.
Rhythmic music punctuates the symbolic levels of the work, which, through a play of visual associations, claims the political value of utopia, imagines a queer liberation and announces a new idea of masculinity. Marlon Riggs, whose work somewhere between activism and video art documented the impact of AIDS in the African-American community, weaves an ode to love between men, celebrates queer activism and the fight against HIV, and calls for an intersectional revolution.

È stato un regista, artista, poeta e attivista queer pluripremiato. Ha scritto, prodotto e diretto otto opere fra film e video. Ha inoltre scritto numerosi articoli accademici su identità, politica, censura, cultura afroamericana e pratiche documentaristiche. Il suo approccio al cinema - che affronta questioni legate alla memoria culturale e all'identità afroamericana - è visibile nei suoi film Ethnic Notions (1987) e Color Adjustment (1991). Ha esplorato temi più personali come la sessualità e la sua sieropositività in Tongues Untied (1989), Affirmations (1990), Anthem (1992), No Regret (1993), Black Is...Black Ain't (1994). Ha saputo usare i suoi film e i suoi scritti per trasformare la vergogna e lo stigma che circondavano l'omosessualità in atti di resistenza e di azione. È morto per complicazioni legate all'AIDS nel 1994.

He was an award-winning filmmaker, artist, poet, and queer activist. He wrote, produced, and directed eight films and videos. He also wrote numerous scholarly articles on identity, politics, censorship, African American culture, and documentary film practice. His approach to filmmaking – addressing questions of cultural memory and African-American identity – were exhibited in his films Ethnic Notions (1987) and Color Adjustment (1991). He explored more personal topics such as sexuality and his HIV status in Tongues Untied (1989), Affirmations (1990), Anthem (1992), No Regret (1993), Black Is…Black Ain’t (1994). Riggs was able to use his films and writings to shift notions of shame and stigma around homosexuality into acts of resistance and agency. He died from AIDS-related complications in 1994.
