Durante l’epidemia di AIDS, i media mainstream propongono un’analisi eterocentrica della malattia e non esitano a sfruttare la morte per fini commerciali. Final Solutions, ultimo capitolo della Aids Trilogy, mette in discussione le menzogne e le ipocrisie del tempo, concentrandosi sulla realtà del consumismo televisivo della società reaganiana.
Muovendo dalla constatazione che nell’epoca neoliberista l’essere umano, il sesso, l’arte, la malattia e la cura sono merci in vendita, Tartaglia dimostra che la “soluzione finale” del capitalismo è assimilare ogni cosa, usando la paura della morte come arma per riprodursi. Realizzato con tecniche sperimentali, il film combina una critica feroce alla cultura consumistica e alla mostruosità dell’universo pubblicitario – smascherato, grazie anche al riuso di immagini televisive, nelle sue narrazioni contraddittorie – con un invito alla resistenza politica.

During the AIDS epidemic, the mainstream media propounded a heterocentric account of the disease and did not hesitate to exploit death for commercial purposes. Final Solutions, the final chapter of the AIDS Trilogy, questions the lies and hypocrisies of that time, focusing on the reality of the televised consumerism of Reagan society.
Assuming that in the neoliberal era the human being, sex, art, disease and cure are all commodities for sale, Tartaglia shows that capitalism's “final solution” is management of all situations through enforced assimilation using death-terror as the weapon. Made with experimental techniques, this film combines a ferocious critique of consumer culture and the monstrosity of the advertising industry - exposed, through TV images, in its contradictory narratives - with an invitation to political resistance.

Regista e autore il cui lavoro nel cinema sperimentale e queer attraversa cinque decenni. La sua opera è influenzata dai film di Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas e Gregory Markopoulos. È stato il primo, nel 1977, a scrivere della sensibilità gay nel cinema d'avanguardia statunitense. Il suo lavoro è spesso legato all’analisi dell'identità gay e la politica queer. A partire dal 1990, sette dei suoi film sono stati presentati in anteprima alla Berlinale. La sua AIDS Trilogy, realizzata all'inizio dell'epidemia negli Stati Uniti, è stata proiettata in tutto il mondo. Nel 1993 ha partecipato alla creazione del simbolo del nastro rosso per la lotta all'AIDS all’interno dell'Artists' Caucus di Visual AIDS di New York. Dall'inizio degli anni '90, ha lavorato al restauro e alla conservazione dell'eredità cinematografica di Jack Smith e in seguito ha prodotto un lungometraggio sul suo lavoro, Escape From Rented Island: The Lost Paradise of Jack Smith (2017).

Filmmaker and writer whose work in experimental film and queer cinema spans five decades. His work cites influences such as the work of Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas, and Gregory Markopoulos. He was the first to write about the gay sensibility in American avant-garde film (1977) and his work is an ongoing examination of gay identity and queer politics. Seven of his films have been premiered at the Berlinale since 1990. In 1993 he took part in the creation of the Red Ribbon as a symbol of AIDS awareness through the Artists' Caucus of Visual AIDS in NYC. Since the early 1990s, he has worked on restoring and preserving the film legacy of Jack Smith and later produced a feature length film concerning Smith’s body of work, Escape From Rented Island: The Lost Paradise of Jack Smith (2017).
