Nel 1984 Derek Jarman faceva parte di una delegazione di registi britannici mandati dal BFI a presentare i loro nuovi film a Mosca e Baku. Mentre era lì iniziò a girare quello che sarebbe diventato Imagining October, una splendida, ineffabile, angosciante meditazione sul sé politico, artistico e sessuale nel mondo: ma anche su Eisenstein nell’Unione Sovietica di Stalin, un regista geniale e un devoto propagandista che cadde dalla grazia dei sovietici; su sé stesso nell’Inghilterra thatcheriana, costantemente frustrato e senza lavoro per il rifiuto di sottomettersi alle aspettative del capitale; su un pittore, interpretato da John Watkiss, che nel suo studio lavora appassionatamente a un dipinto militare del Realismo Socialista, incentrato su una scena omoerotica di cameratismo fra soldati; sui soldati stessi, che si spogliano delle loro uniformi spogliandosi così anche di qualunque compromesso col mondo.

In 1984, Derek Jarman was part of a delegation of British filmmakers sent by the BFI to present their recent films in Moscow and Baku. While there, he started shooting what was to become Imagining October, a splendid, ineffable, anguishing meditation on the artistic, sexual, political self in the world: on Eisenstein in Stalinist Soviet Union, a genius filmmaker, a devoted propagandist who fell out of Soviet grace; on himself in Thatcherist England, constantly frustrated and out of work for not submitting to the expectations of the capital; of a painter performed by John Watkiss, working lustfully in his studio on a Socialist Realist military tableau showing a homoerotic scene of comradeship between soldiers; on the soldiers themselves, undressing their military uniform, stripping off their compromise to the world.

È nato a Londra nel 1942. La sua carriera ha attraversato decadi e generi diversi, dalla pittura alla scenografia teatrale, dalla regia alla poesia e alla scrittura, fino al giardinaggio. Tra i suoi film si ricordano Sebastiane (1976), Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), The Last of England (1987), Edward II (1991) e Blue (1993), oltre a innumerevoli e provvidenziali corti in Super8 e video musicali per gli Smiths, i Pet Shop Boys e Marianne Faithfull. I suoi dipinti – per i quali fu candidato ai Turner Prize nel 1986 – continuano a essere mostrati in tutto il mondo, e il suo giardino in Dungeness rimane meta di pellegrinaggio per fan e visitatori. È morto di una malattia legata all’AIDS nel 1994; gran parte del suo lavoro, un capolavoro nella sua interezza (fatto di memorie, poesia, cinema, etc.) è stato ispirato dalla sua lotta per la vita.

He was born in London in 1942. His career spanned decades and genres, from painter, theatre designer, director, filmmaker, to poet, writer, campaigner and gardener. His films include Sebastiane (1976), Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), The Last of England (1987), Edward II (1991) and Blue (1993), countless providential Super 8mm short films, and music videos for The Smiths, the Pet Shop Boys and Marianne Faithfull. His paintings – for which he was a Turner Prize nominee in 1986 – continue to be exhibited worldwide, and his garden in Dungeness remains a site of pilgrimage to fans and newcomers alike. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1994; much of his later work, a masterpiece in its entirety (consisting of memoirs, poetry, cinema, etc.) was inspired by his struggle for life.
