Nel suo primo film professionale dopo il diploma alla FAMU, Věra Chytilová ritrae la stessa ribellione femminile presente nei suoi lavori successivi più famosi (specialmente Le margheritine, 1966), questa volta attraverso la storia di Eva Gálová, la nuova arrivata della pensione femminile di una fabbrica tessile. La macchina da presa vede tutto attraverso il suo punto di vista, si sentono i suoi pensieri interiori tramite la voce fuoricampo, e tuttavia è raramente parte dell’azione in sé. Guarda le altre ragazze, i loro teneri atti di rivolta, in una sorellanza omoerotica che è anche gioco con il mondo esterno – parlano di ragazzi, di uomini, di scuola militare, dell’esercito, qualcuna persino di Dio, tutto in maniera apparentemente astratta, parte di un ordine mondiale che, per il momento, è fuori dalla loro portata: fuoricampo.

In her first professional film after graduating FAMU, Věra Chytilová depicts the same female rebellion present in later, more famous works of hers (especially Daisies, 1966), this time through the story of Eva Gálová, the newcomer at a girls’ boarding house of a textile factory. The camera sees everything from her point of view, her inner thoughts take over the voice over, yet she’s rarely part of the action per se. She watches the other girls, their tenderous acts of revolt, homoerotic sisterhood and games with the outside world – they talk about boys, men, military school, the army, sometimes even about God, all seeming rather abstract, part of a world order that, for the moment, is out of their reach: out in the off-screen.

Icona della Nouvelle Vague cecoslovacca, regista est europea, di cinema modernista più ampiamente, nata nel 1929 e morta nel 2014, si è laureata alla scuola di cinema FAMU nel 1962 – la prima donna a farlo in Cecoslovacchia. I suoi film da studentessa furono apprezzati già ai tempi, così come il suo film d’esordio, Something Different (1963), che alterna la vita di un vero ginnasta con la storia fittizia di una casalinga. Il suo film successivo, Le margheritine (1966), la rese famosa nel mondo, diventando l’immagine più forte della cosiddetta Primavera di Praga, un periodo di riforme e rinnovamento nelle politiche comuniste della Cecoslovacchia. Dopo l’agosto 1968, quando le truppe del Patto di Varsavia (URSS, Ungheria, Polonia e Bulgaria) invasero il paese e imposero un cambio di regime, divenne più difficile per lei ricevere permessi e finanziamenti per i suoi film. Dopo la caduta del regime comunista, ha ultimato molti profondi documentari e quattro film di finzione che facevano satira del capitalismo e rivelavano il suo sguardo fortemente ed equamente morale.

An icon of the Czech New Wave, Eastern European filmmaking, and of modernist cinema at large, born in 1929 and died in 2014, she graduated from the Prague film school FAMU in 1962 – the first woman to do so in Czechoslovakia. Her student films were appreciated at the time, and so was her debut feature, Something Different (1963), which intercuts the life of a real gymnast with a fictional story of a housewife. Her next feature, Daisies (1966), made her world-famous, becoming the very image of the so-called Prague Spring, a period of reform and renewal of Czechoslovakian communist politics. After August 1968, when the troops of the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria) invaded the country and forced a change of regime, having films approved and financed became much more difficult for her. After the fall of the communist regime, she completed many penetrating documentaries and four more features satirizing capitalism and revealing her still equally strong moral stance.
