Nato a Canton, Ohio, nel 1962, ora residente e attivo a Los Angeles, ha completato gli studi alla Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, nel 1985, e un diploma di belle arti al California Institute of Arts, Valencia, California, nel 1990. Ha diretto due lungometraggi sperimentali, Massillon (1991) e Finished (1997), oltre che diversi corti, e il documentario Is It Really So Strange? (2004).
