Nuno arriva nella casa in campagna della sorella Laura, infelice moglie di un uomo più grande di lei. L’allevatore Alberto sconvolge l’equilibrio di Nuno e l’apparenza ipocrita di un mondo tradizionalista e rurale viene messa alla prova.
Fra cenni di bigottismo e rimasugli di una morale imperialista poco tollerante, il Portogallo del secondo film di Joaquim Pinto è un teatro in cui ciò che è davvero mosso dal desiderio deve consumarsi dietro le quinte, lasciando i silenzi e le convenzioni sul palcoscenico. Le interpretazioni dei protagonisti, e in particolare quella di Laura Morante (già protagonista del cinema portoghese in À flor do mar di João César Monteiro tre anni prima), condiscono un film elegantissimo, che sa rivelare i turbamenti dei corpi e delle anime con delicatezza.

Nuno arrives at the country house of his sister Laura, an unhappy wife of an older man. The farmer Alberto upsets Nuno’s equilibrium and the hypocritical appearance of a traditionalist and rural world is put to the test.
Between hints of bigotry and remnants of an imperialist morality with little tolerance, the Portugal of Joaquim Pinto’s second feature film is a theatre in which what is truly moved by desire must be consummated behind the scenes, leaving silences and conventions on the stage. The interpretations of the protagonists, and in particular that of Laura Morante (already a protagonist of Portuguese cinema in Hovering Over The Water by João César Monteiro three years earlier), flavour a very elegant film, which knows how to reveal the turmoil of bodies and souls with delicacy.

Originario di Porto, classe 1957, ha lavorato come tecnico del suono per importanti registi sia dentro che fuori dal Portogallo. Il suo primo film da regista, Uma pedra no bolso risale al 1988, mentre il secondo, Onde bate o sol, è datato 1989. Dalla fine degli Anni Novanta le regie dei suoi film (come E agora? Lembra-me, Rabo de Peixe, Pathos Ethos Logos) sono co-firmate dal partner e poi marito Nuno Leonel, e sono presentate in festival importanti come Berlino e Locarno.

Born in Porto in 1957, he worked as a sound engineer for important directors both inside and outside Portugal. In 1988 he made his first feature film, Tall Stories, and his second feature-length film, Where The Sun Beats, dates back to 1989. Since the end of the Nineties his directorial efforts (such as What Now? Remind Me, Fish Tail, Pathos Ethos Logos) are co-signed by his partner and then husband Nuno Leonel, and they were presented in important festivals like Berlin and Locarno.
