A causa dei brutti voti presi a scuola, Miguel è costretto dai genitori ad andare a studiare durante l’estate dalla zia Marta in una località balneare portoghese vicino Sintra, “un posto dove non succede nulla”. L’incontro con il pescatore João, la cameriera Luisa e il misterioso dottor Fernando però lo convinceranno che forse qualcosa succede sotto le apparenze, oltre gli sguardi e i silenziosi paesaggi costieri.
L’opera prima di Joaquim Pinto, qui anche montatore e direttore della fotografia, rilegge il tradizionale coming-of-age rendendolo un terreno amorfo e fertile di nuove scoperte. Miguel costruisce il suo acerbo desiderio di adolescente tramite i suoi incontri e arrampicandosi sulle storie degli altri, su quello che vede e quello che immagina, scoprendo la sua identità fra curiosità, sorprese e delusioni. Nuno Leonel realizza i titoli di coda.

Because of his bad school grades, Miguel is forced by his parents to go and study during the summer with his aunt Marta in a Portoguese seaside village near Sintra, “a place where nothing ever happens”. However, the encounter with the fisherman João, the waitress Luisa and the mysterious doctor Fernando will convince him that perhaps something happens beneath the surface, beyond the looks and the silent coastal landscapes.
The first work by Joaquim Pinto, here also editor and cinematographer, reimagines the traditional coming-of-age making it an amorphous and fertile ground for new discoveries. Miguel builds his immature teenager desire through his meetings and by climbing on others’ stories, on what he spots and what he imagines, finding out his identity through curiosity, surprises and disappointments. Nuno Leonel made the closing credits.

Originario di Porto, classe 1957, ha lavorato come tecnico del suono per importanti registi sia dentro che fuori dal Portogallo. Il suo primo film da regista, Uma pedra no bolso risale al 1988, mentre il secondo, Onde bate o sol, è datato 1989. Dalla fine degli Anni Novanta le regie dei suoi film (come E agora? Lembra-me, Rabo de Peixe, Pathos Ethos Logos) sono co-firmate dal partner e poi marito Nuno Leonel, e sono presentate in festival importanti come Berlino e Locarno.

Born in Porto in 1957, he worked as a sound engineer for important directors both inside and outside Portugal. In 1988 he made his first feature film, Tall Stories, and his second feature-length film, Where The Sun Beats, dates back to 1989. Since the end of the Nineties his directorial efforts (such as What Now? Remind Me, Fish Tail, Pathos Ethos Logos) are co-signed by his partner and then husband Nuno Leonel, and they were presented in important festivals like Berlin and Locarno.
