Andrés Roca Rey, il componente più giovane di una storica famiglia di matador, forse il “miglior torero al mondo”, deve prepararsi alla prossima corrida. Il costume stretto lo costringe a lunghe pratiche di vestizione, con l’aiuto della sua squadra di assistenti; il percorso verso il successivo “palcoscenico di sangue”, dove si scontrerà contro il prossimo toro, è una fase di incoraggiamento e motivazione da parte di allenatori e autisti. Dentro l’arena, sulla sabbia, ha poi inizio la performance, un rituale in cui affermare la propria solitaria onnipotenza, uno scontro ipnotico che il regista catalano Albert Serra visualizza come fosse un centro di gravità permanente. E non si sa più il confine fra finzione e documentario se la vita vera di un uomo di sangue e di spettacolo è una continua performance, un processo ossessivo di autoconvincimento, una sospensione dell’incredulità richiamata, di norma, dall’ammissione dei propri limiti. Un film potente, mesmerico, inquietante. Sulla solitudine del potere, vero o fittizio che sia.

Andrés Roca Rey, the youngest member of a historic family of matadors, perhaps the "best bullfighter in the world", must prepare for the next bullfight. His tight costume forces him to undergo lengthy dressing procedures, aided by his team of assistants; the journey to the next "bloody stage", where he will face the next bull, is a time of encouragement and motivation from trainers and drivers. Inside the arena, on the sand, the performance begins, a ritual in which he asserts his solitary omnipotence, a hypnotic clash that Catalan director Albert Serra visualizes as if it were a permanent center of gravity. And the boundary between fiction and documentary is blurred if the real life of a man of blood and spectacle is a continuous performance, an obsessive process of self-persuasion, a suspension of disbelief usually prompted by the admission of one's own limitations. Regista e sceneggiatore classe 1975, fondatore della casa di produzione Andergraun Films, è protagonista di importanti palcoscenici festivalieri in tutto il mondo: Honor de cavalleria (2006), è presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs del Festival di Cannes; Historia de la meva mort (2013) è in concorso al Festival di Locarno; Liberté è ad Un Certain Regard di Cannes 2019. La consacrazione definitiva è data da Pacifiction, in concorso a Cannes 2022, candidato a nove Premi César, primo posto in classifica per i Cahiers du Cinéma che in genere celebrano con copertine ed elogi i suoi lavori. Tardes de Soledad ha esordito al Festival di San Sebastián nel 2024, vincendo la Concha de Oro, il massimo premio del concorso principale.

Born in 1975, a director and screenwriter, founder of the production company Andergraun Films, he has appeared at major festivals around the world: Honour of the Knights (2006) was presented in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival; Story of My Death (2013) was in competition at the Locarno Film Festival; Liberté was in Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2019. His definitive acclaim came with Pacifiction, in competition at Cannes 2022, nominated for nine César Awards, and first place in the Cahiers du Cinéma rankings, which typically celebrate his works with covers and praise. Afternoons of Solitude debuted at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2024, winning the Concha de Oro, the top prize in the main competition.
