La liberazione, in contesti violenti, passa anche da strategie violente. Insiang è una giovane cresciuta nelle baracche di Manila. Vive in balia di una madre dispotica, che è stata abbandonata dal marito ed è ora sedotta da un delinquente di nome Dado, un ragazzo molto più giovane. Lui ha forse intenzione di usarla per sedurre Insiang, ma sarà lei per prima a usarlo come strumento di vendetta, in maniere assolutamente imprevedibili. Solo così potrà essere libera di vivere la sua vita e forse anche un amore vero, senza costrizione, alla ricerca della bellezza.
In questo melodramma sociale di strepitosa efficacia cinematografica e potenza di sguardo, Lino Brocka racconta un mondo di povertà e di sottomissione ma anche dei sistemi di sopravvivenza e di ribellione ai soprusi. Dalle parti del cinema di Douglas Sirk e di Rainer Werner Fassbinder Fassbinder, ma nelle Filippine ostaggio del dittatore Marcos e della moglie Imelda, contro cui il regista si è battuto instancabilmente nella sua vita.

In violent contexts, liberation requires violent strategies too. Insiang is a young woman raised in the slums of Manila. She lives at the mercy of her domineering mother, abandoned by her husband and now seduced by a criminal named Dado, a much younger boy. He’s probably using the mother to seduce Insiang herself, but she will be the one to use him instead as a tool for revenge, in completely unpredictable ways. Only then can she be free to live her life and perhaps even find true love, without constraint, in the pursuit of beauty.
In this social melodrama of astonishing cinematic effectiveness and powerful vision, Lino Brocka depicts a world of poverty and submission, but also of systems of survival and rebellion against abuse. In the realm of the cinema of Douglas Sirk and Rainer Werner Fassbinder Fassbinder, but in the Philippines held hostage by the dictator Marcos and his wife Imelda, against whom the director fought tirelessly throughout his life.

Uno dei più celebri registi filippini, nato nel 1939 e morto nel 1991, noto per film di grande attivismo sociale come Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975), Insiang (1976) e Macho Dancer (1988). Arrivò in Europa e ottenne successo internazionale quando passò dal festival di Cannes. Ha co-fondato i Concerned Artists of the Philippines, in opposizione alla dittatura di Marcos. È stato premiato postumo come Artista Cinematografico Nazionale nel suo paese.

One of the most famous Filipino filmmakers, born in 1939 and dead in 1991, he is known for socially conscious films like Manila in the Claws of Light (1975), Insiang (1976) and Macho Dancer (1988). He arrived in Europe and received international acclaim when his work was shown in Cannes. He co-cofounded the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, opposed to Marcos dictatorship. Posthumously, he was honored as a National Artist for Film.
