Il giovane gigolò Pol rischia di impoverirsi quando il suo ricco cliente americano torna in patria. Decide allora di lasciare la provincia per provare a fare fortuna nella capitale Manila. Farà amicizia con lo spregiudicato Noel che lo introdurrà all’arte del macho dancing, uno spogliarello erotico che prevede anche balli di gruppo e performance di coppia. Entrerà così nel terribile mondo del sottobosco metropolitano, fra droga e prostituzione, mettendo a repentaglio la sua vita – e scoprendo lati imprevisti del suo desiderio.
Il melodramma erotico di Lino Brocka non è solo un tragico quadro della metropoli filippina negli anni Novanta, inquadrata con un iperrealismo sconvolgente, ma anche un cosciente viaggio nelle contraddizioni del desiderio e nel confine sottile fra sesso e mercificazione. Dietro l’erotismo e i generi cinematografici (action, noir, dramma generazionale) è tratteggiato un brutale trattato antropologico sull’autodistruzione.

Young gigolo Pol risks impoverishment when his wealthy American client returns home. Then he decides to leave the provinces to try his luck in the capital, Manila. He befriends the unscrupulous Noel, who introduces him to the art of macho dancing, an erotic striptease that also includes group dancing and performances by couples. He thus enters the terrifying world of the metropolitan underworld, amidst drugs and prostitution, putting his life at risk – and discovering unexpected sides of his desire.
Lino Brocka's erotic melodrama is not only a tragic portrait of the Philippine metropolis in the 1990s, framed with shocking hyperrealism, but also a conscious journey into the contradictions of desire and the fine line between sex and objectification. Behind eroticism and film genres (action, noir, generational drama) there is a brutal anthropological essay on self-destruction.

Uno dei più celebri registi filippini, nato nel 1939 e morto nel 1991, noto per film di grande attivismo sociale come Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975), Insiang (1976) e Macho Dancer (1988). Arrivò in Europa e ottenne successo internazionale quando passò dal festival di Cannes. Ha co-fondato i Concerned Artists of the Philippines, in opposizione alla dittatura di Marcos. È stato premiato postumo come Artista Cinematografico Nazionale nel suo paese.

One of the most famous Filipino filmmakers, born in 1939 and dead in 1991, he is known for socially conscious films like Manila in the Claws of Light (1975), Insiang (1976) and Macho Dancer (1988). He arrived in Europe and received international acclaim when his work was shown in Cannes. He co-cofounded the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, opposed to Marcos dictatorship. Posthumously, he was honored as a National Artist for Film.
