Una visione storica e sociale della vita filippina stretta nella morsa della povertà, della prostituzione e dei cambiamenti rivoluzionari. È una cronaca della storia personale del regista che si intreccia con gli sconvolgimenti sociali degli ultimi vent'anni, culminati nella Rivoluzione del Potere Popolare del 1986.
Combinando filmini amatoriali in Super-8 e fotografie con filmati tratti dai suoi documentari, il regista ripercorre la sua infanzia fino agli anni della sua crescita durante il periodo della legge marziale. Questo film autobiografico diventa una testimonianza non solo della sua vita personale, ma anche della vita sociale che ha conosciuto. Il film cattura la storia contemporanea da vicino e in modo personale.

A historical and social view of Filipino life caught in the throes of poverty, prostitution, and revolutionary change. It is a chronicle of the filmmaker’s personal history as it intersects with the social upheaval of the past twenty years climaxing in the 1986 People’s Power Revolution.
Combining Super-8 home movies and photographs together with footage taken from his documentaries, the filmmaker revisits his childhood leading to his growing up years during the Martial Law period. This autobiographical film becomes a record not only of his personal life but also of the social life he knew. The film captures contemporary history up close and personal.

Filmmaker, storico del cinema, professore al Philippines Film Institute, nasce nel 1959 e completa un Master in Cinema Studies alla New York University nel 1989. Nello stesso anno riceve un diploma in Cinema all'Atelier de Formation du Cinéma in Francia. Comincia a realizzare film a partire dagli anni Ottanta con il documentario Oliver (1983), e negli stessi anni è autore del primo dei suoi numerosi saggi, Short Film: Emergence of a New Philippine Cinema (1985). Ha ricevuto numerosissimi riconoscimenti in giro per il mondo (una delle Ten Oustanding Young Persons of the World in Giappone nel 1993, per dirne una) e nel 1999 ha fondato il Pink Film Festival, prima manifestazione di cinema gay e lesbico delle Filippine.

He began making films in the 1980s with the documentary Oliver (1983), and in the same years he wrote the first of his many essays, Short Film: Emergence of a New Philippine Cinema (1985). He has received numerous awards around the world (one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World in Japan in 1993, for example) and in 1999 he founded the Pink Film Festival, the first gay and lesbian film festival in the Philippines.
