Un uomo sente un rumore provenire dalla sua aspirapolvere. E come se stesse… tossendo. È possibile forse? L’attraente tecnico di elettrodomestici glielo conferma. E gli rivela, in uno scambio sempre più intenso ed erotico, che dietro a quell’aspirapolvere c’è la storia di Nat, della sua morte, del suo ritorno come fantasma, della volontà capitalistica di cancellare la memoria degli ultimi, forse di tutti i fantasmi della Thailandia contemporanea.
L’opera prima di Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke è uno degli esordi più convincenti ed esaltanti degli ultimi anni, premiato alla Semaine de la Critique di Cannes per lo straordinario fascino visivo e per la satira corrosiva sui rapporti sociali che si fa forte di una variegata commistione di generi (fantascienza, fantasy, commedia) per approdare al meglio cui può aspirare un cinema che si dica davvero queer: essere politico, romantico, irriverente, sognatore, inventivo.

A man hears a noise coming from his vacuum cleaner. It’s as if it were… coughing. Could that be possible? The attractive appliance technician confirms it. And, in an increasingly intense and erotic exchange, he reveals that behind that vacuum cleaner lies the story of Nat—of her death, her return as a ghost, and the capitalist drive to erase the memory of the marginalized, perhaps even of all the ghosts of contemporary Thailand.
Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke’s debut feature is one of the most compelling and exhilarating first films of recent years, awarded at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes for its extraordinary visual allure and its biting satire of social relations. Drawing strength from a rich blend of genres (sci-fi, fantasy, comedy), it achieves the highest ambition of a cinema that we can truly define queer: to be political, romantic, irreverent, dreamlike and inventive.

Nato, cresciuto e residente a Bangkok, è un regista e critico cinematografico. Si è laureato presso il dipartimento di cinema della Chulalongkorn University. Attualmente lavora a tempo pieno come sceneggiatore per uno studio, scrivendo lungometraggi commerciali e serie televisive. Oltre alla scrittura, insegna teoria del cinema e sceneggiatura nelle università. È stato selezionato per partecipare al programma Berlinale Talents nel 2020, e il suo cortometraggio Red Aninsri; or, Tiptoeing on the Still Trembling Berlin Wall ha vinto il Junior Jury Award nella sezione Pardi di Domani a Locarno 2020. A Useful Ghost ha avuto la sua prima mondiale alla Semaine de la Critique di Cannes nel 2025.

Born, brought up and based in Bangkok, he’s a filmmaker and film critic. He graduated from the film department of Chula-longkorn University. Currently he works full-time as a scriptwriter for the studio, writing commercial features and television series. Apart from writing he also teaches film theory and scriptwriting in the universities. He was selected to participate in Berlinale Talents program in 2020, and his short film Red Aninsri; or, Tiptoeing on the Still Trembling Berlin Wall won Junior Jury Award in the Pardi di Domani section in Locarno 2020. A Useful Ghost had its world premiere at the Cannes Critics’ Week in 2025.
