Il regista Mathieu Morel raccoglie tutte le GIF animate a cui ha messo mi piace su tumblr nel 2019, in un’insolita operazione di rimontaggio che usa il web come un archivio moderno da rileggere, reinterpretare, fare proprio, abitare.
Quanto le nostre abitudini di consumo digitale dicono di noi? Quanto il nostro algoritmo ci rappresenta? È possibile dedurre l’essenza di un individuo dalle immagini che consuma? Sembra quasi chiederci questo il regista, in un’operazione di autoanalisi che non pretende risposte definitive preferendo loro uno spaccato onesto e senza censure della sua identità digitale, come con un invito a perdersi in un flusso apparentemente disordinato. L’effetto è quello tipico del surfer su Internet: la ricerca diventa un naufragare nel mare di input e informazioni.

Director Mathieu Morel gathers all the animated GIFs he liked on Tumblr in 2019 in an unusual re-editing process that treats the web as a modern archive - something to revisit, reinterpret, make one’s own, and inhabit.
How much do our digital consumption habits say about us? How much does our algorithm represent us? Is it possible to deduce the essence of an individual from the images they consume? These are the questions the director seems to pose, through an act of self-analysis that does not seek definitive answers, but instead offers an honest, unfiltered glimpse into his digital identity - almost as an invitation to lose oneself in an apparently disordered flow. The effect is that of the typical internet surfer: the search becomes a drifting, a kind of shipwreck in a sea of inputs and information.

Si è trasferito a Parigi nel 2014 per studiare cinema. Nel 2015, lui e Léolo Victor-Pujebet hanno fondato l’associazione Horschamp – Rencontres de Cinéma, sponsorizzata da Thierry Frémaux, una realtà che promuove film del patrimonio cinematografico e organizza incontri e discussioni con una vasta gamma di artisti, alcuni dei quali lo sosterranno e lo guideranno in futuro (Bertrand Bonello, Jean-Gabriel Périot e Olivier Ducastel). Nel 2019 si è laureato a La Fémis con il film Aussi fort que tu peux. Nel giugno 2023 si è tenuta una retrospettiva dei suoi film alla Cinémathèque Française (“Monographie en sept films”) come parte del ciclo Sexperimentaux. Nel 2024 The Deep Queer Massacre (2023) è fuori concorso al Sicilia Queer filmfest, mentre l’anno successivo Anapidae (Appelle-moi) concorre nella sezione Nuove visioni.

He moved to Paris in 2014 to study film. In 2015, he and Léolo Victor-Pujebet founded the association Horschamp – Rencontres de Cinéma, sponsored by Thierry Frémaux, an initiative dedicated to promoting films from the cinematic heritage and organizing screenings, discussions and encounters with a wide range of artists, some of whom would later support and mentor him (Bertrand Bonello, Jean-Gabriel Périot, Olivier Ducastel). In 2019, he graduated from La Fémis with the film Aussi fort que tu peux. In June 2023, a retrospective of his work was held at the Cinémathèque Française (“Monographie en sept films”) as part of the Sexperimentaux programme. In 2024, The Deep Queer Massacre (2023) screened out of competition at the Sicilia Queer filmfest, while the following year Anapidae (Appelle-moi) was in the New Visions competition.
