Cairo, 2007. “Sono tornato al Cairo. Per lavoro. Hai cambiato il tuo numero di telefono, Omar. Devo trovarti. Ti amo… Abdellah”. Il regista Abdellah Taïa vaga per le strade del Cairo con la sua handycam, alla ricerca del suo amore perduto Omar. Ma chi o cosa sta cercando davvero Abdellah? Il suo sguardo desiderante si riflette dallo specchio del suo appartamento e attraversa le strade, incontra gli sguardi di altri uomini, tra cui quello dolce e malinconico del rinomato regista Youssef Chahine, che Abdellah incontra un anno prima della morte. In un paese in cui i diritti delle persone lgbt non sono riconosciuti, la carezza digitale del regista ci porta a contatto con una città vibrante e vitale, piena di indizi di storie che ci portano ad altre storie, alla ricerca di un amante che è in fondo la città stessa. Il “tu” a cui il regista indirizza messaggi d’amore diventa un corpo espanso, in un cinema che è rifiuto della solitudine.

Cairo, 2007. “I have returned to Cairo. For work. You changed your phone number, Omar. I have to find you. I love you… Abdellah.” Filmmaker Abdellah Taïa wanders through the streets of Cairo with his handycam, searching for his lost love, Omar. But who, or what, is Abdellah really looking for? His desiring gaze is reflected in the mirror of his apartment and moves through the streets, meeting the gazes of other men, including the gentle and melancholic one of renowned director Youssef Chahine, whom Abdellah meets a year before his death.
In a country where the rights of LGBT people are not recognized, the filmmaker’s digital caress brings us into contact with a vibrant, vital city, full of traces of stories that lead to other stories, in search of a lover who is ultimately the city itself. The “you” to whom the director addresses his messages of love becomes an expanded body, in a cinema that rejects solitude.

Nasce a Salè, vicino Rabat, nel 1973. È regista e scrittore. Ha pubblicato diversi romanzi per le Éditions du Seuil, tra cui L’Armée du Salut (2014), che ha adattato per diventare il suo primo film, presentato alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia e anche al Sicilia Queer, che nel 2021 gli ha consegnato il Premio Nino Gennaro. Il suo sguardo indaga la relazione tra Oriente ed Occidente, l’amore e la sua rappresentazione tra parole e immagini, la relazione tra Islam e omosessualità. Cairo Streets (2025) è stato presentato al Cairo Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, New York Film Festival e al Festival di Locarno nella sezione Pardi di Domani. Vive e lavora a Parigi.

He was born in Salé, near Rabat, in 1973. He is a filmmaker and writer. He has published several novels with Éditions du Seuil, including Salvation Army (2014), which he adapted into his first film, presented at the Venice Film Festival and also at Sicilia Queer, who awarded him in 2021 with the Nino Gennaro Award. His work explores the relationship between East and West, love and its representation between words and images, and the relationship between Islam and homosexuality. Cairo Streets (2025) was presented at the Cairo International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and at the Locarno Film Festival in the Pardi di Domani section. He lives and works in Paris.
