A year in the life of the directors Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel. The former undergoes an experimental treatment against HIV with a new drugs, enduring its psychotropic and debilitating collateral effects; the latter assists him and stays by his side during their quiet existence in the Portuguese countryside, surrounded by their dogs and by nature. Meanwhile the memories of a whole career pile up, overlap, and create a thread of unfailing attachment to life, despite everything.
In their most famous film, awarded in Locarno and submitted by Portugal for the Best Foreign Picture at the 2014 Oscars, Pinto and Leonel melts in a single place the feverish need to create new images and the essential care to produce just the ones that really count. It would only be a movie made up of home movies and simple amateur footage if the two directors did not contrive a real fight against death and ephemeral.

Theo is faced with the darkness of a silent city. Numbed by the urban voids, and by the human indifference of other people’s faces and bodies, he goes to the countryside to visit his friend Ida.
Carlos Pereira’s intense filmography is enriched with a new piece, a puzzle of silences that evokes spleen but works under the skin to surprise with the little things. Bodies in an often frustrated desiring tension, bodies that think they control their actions and instead wander like drifting icebergs, hoping to bump into something or someone.

Jacques Nolot wakes up in the Parisian apartment where he has lived for the last 50 years, since 1970s. He puts on a sweater, takes his medicine and, with a cigarette in his mouth, makes himself a coffee. He goes out in the car, tells anecdotes, remembers the past. He returns home, and while his voice evokes thoughts between the prosaic and the existential, he lies down to sleep.
Everything that Nolo had already delivered, in the form of cinematic fiction, of his life as a former gigolo, returns in an extremely intimate way in Maxence Vassilyevitch’s film. The protagonist is the man, not the actor and director. His stories focus on the men he has loved, met, desired and feared, including the father who abandoned him when he was four years old. Through the love of writing and art, life emerges, a life that, without drama and complaints, as Nolot himself repeats, must be dealt with.

In the former Caseros prison in Buenos Aires, the true stories of cisgender women and transgender people come back to life in a hybrid solution: documentary and musical meet to restore humanity, voice and body to those who are often reduced to a number or a stereotype. Characters like Yoseli, imprisoned for drug trafficking, or Nacho, a trans man who finds an escape in music, present the experience of detention as a living experience, full of memory and revenge.
Reas is not just a documentary, it is an emotional journey contested between reality and fiction, between pain and emancipation. Directed by Argentine playwright Lola Arias, personal moments alternate with collective sequences in which solidarity and sisterhood become tools of resistance, thus composing a powerful and poetic work, capable of breaking down prejudices and showing the complexity of those who live on the margins.

Mosca, 1926.

Moscow, 1926. Spouses Lyuda and Kolya live in a little apartment. Volodya, a former war comrade of Kolya’s, takes the train to Moscow to work in a printing press, but cannot find a place to sleep, other than the spouses’ free sofa. Kolya welcomes him with a nearly erotic enthusiasm, while Lyuda is politely distant towards him, until she falls in… and out of love with him, the film becoming a fascinating account of sexual politics, a Lubitschian tale of indecision between who gets the bed and who gets the sofa.
These were strange times for the USSR: Lenin passed away two years before, the New Economic Policy (centralized free market) was ongoing, and there was a housing shortage in Moscow. Furthermore, Alexandra Kollontai speculated it to be the time of the “Winged Eros”: a new erotic consciousness of the Soviet working class, wary of bourgeois institutionalized and possessive love.

This and many other things is The Trio Hall, the venomous satire by Su Hui-yu, based on a homonymous performance from 2023. On one side the movie violently stabs the ridiculous and hypocrite ways we use (and used in the past as well) high philosophical concepts to justify our (a)morality, and on the other side it explores the chances of transvestitism and alterity with a mad rhythm, as in a foolish circus that washes away all the certainties.

Frustrated within this large extended family, she surrounds herself with characters (and animals) that allow her to assert herself as a stubborn, obstinate woman, still full of desires. Or at least, they try.
Laura Morante's sparkling comedy, the second after the French Cherry on the Cake in 2012, confirms the vibrant (self) irony of a gaze that knows how to review and relaunch itself. Morante calibrates a singular story that is also a chorus of grotesque and funny situations, reporting in full to the viewer the fraught path of those who want to find different and non-canonical solutions to be happy. So that it becomes clear that it is never too late to seek one's own autonomy - psychoanalytically, sexually, sentimentally.

Marciante paints an intimate black-and-white portrait of the Sicilian performer Caso-x, allowing the complexity of the queer scene they inhabit to emerge; beneath and within the surface, the unresolved tensions of a constantly transforming universe like that of drag simmer.
Drag shatters into a thousand pieces of a mirror, offering a vivisected reflection of a moment in which everything is hyper-visible—so much so that it becomes blinding. The biographical and artistic fragments of Caso-x, a drag creature with a camp and unsettling aesthetic, reveal some of the short circuits that animate this culture: what is the distance between one's own identity and the anti-identity of drag? What are the boundaries of the performer's body, embedded in a relational and artistic web that hybridizes it? And through which strategies does this very body take shape as a utopia?

In this long interview, the wisdom of a voice that remains even if the person who emits it is no longer with us reverberates. In fact, Nino Drago died in October 2024, not remembered by his colleagues and career companions, leaving behind this long confession that combines sagacity and bitterness, and that, even in evoking chronicles of real life, lets flashes of creativity come out.

[eng]
How do you tell the story of a separation? Can you do it through images? Paula, who is separating from Joy after a ten-year relationship, askes herself this question. She asks herself this because she looks at the images taken by her father, José Luis, when he separated from her mother, Luz María, thirty years earlier. Can the images that remain represent an exorcism, or do they perhaps solve nothing?
Behind the appearance of a classic nostalgic found footage movie, which attempts to put the pieces of the past back together, The Distance You Left instead oppressively looks out over the absence of a future. Love ends and it is difficult to wander in the void it leaves. The temptation arises to reinterpret the past and to use its images not as a real document but as a fallacious argument to tell a story that never was, intercepting a hint of hope in an ephemeral fact. Paula Veleiro’s film is a naked self-portrait of the director, so bare and direct that it does not hide the most uncomfortable self-deceptions, revealing them furtively even though it never manages to confess them to itself.

Nuno arrives at the country house of his sister Laura, an unhappy wife of an older man. The farmer Alberto upsets Nuno’s equilibrium and the hypocritical appearance of a traditionalist and rural world is put to the test.
Between hints of bigotry and remnants of an imperialist morality with little tolerance, the Portugal of Joaquim Pinto’s second feature film is a theatre in which what is truly moved by desire must be consummated behind the scenes, leaving silences and conventions on the stage. The interpretations of the protagonists, and in particular that of Laura Morante (already a protagonist of Portuguese cinema in Hovering Over The Water by João César Monteiro three years earlier), flavour a very elegant film, which knows how to reveal the turmoil of bodies and souls with delicacy.

[eng]
Mutiny: some caregivers have a party in a nursing home on New Year’s Eve. Boarding: a Congolese family living in Germany is visited by a pretended social worker. Adrift: a man crushed by his community wanders in the medieval German countryside. Spanning three interlinked but stylistically distinct films, the triptych navigates the metaphoric and literal topographies of shipwreck as both rupture and reckoning, building a suggestive meditation on exile, identity, and the fractured condition of modern belonging.
Through performance and genre, hysterical laughs and chills, Deniz Eroğlu reframes the archetype of the castaway, not as victim of nature, but as a subject adrift in the tides of history, bureaucracy, and cultural displacement. Fragmented timelines and layered media collapse boundaries between past and present, personal and geopolitical. The trilogy’s protagonists, caught between languages, homelands and identities, embody the post-national condition of human beings condemned to exist in an ambivalent space.

Geneviève runs an umbrella shop with her mother. She is in love with Guy, a young auto mechanic, but her mother dreams of her to be married with a wealthy diamond merchant. But the Algerian War breaks out, and the army calls up Guy.
Michel Legrand sets Jacques Demy’s genius words to music: together, they craft a fully sung melodrama in perfect harmony, where every line of dialogue is sung, every emotion is harmonised, and in the meantime the pastel façades and the saturated primary colours hide a precise anatomy of heartbreak. Feelings are limited by social class, geography, and historical rupture: the Algerian War is not a backdrop but a fault line that separates lovers and replaces desire with duty. Geneviève and Guy are protagonists of a musical that does not make characters evade but becomes the evocation of a trap, outside illusion.

Because of his bad school grades, Miguel is forced by his parents to go and study during the summer with his aunt Marta in a Portoguese seaside village near Sintra, “a place where nothing ever happens”. However, the encounter with the fisherman João, the waitress Luisa and the mysterious doctor Fernando will convince him that perhaps something happens beneath the surface, beyond the looks and the silent coastal landscapes.
The first work by Joaquim Pinto, here also editor and cinematographer, reimagines the traditional coming-of-age making it an amorphous and fertile ground for new discoveries. Miguel builds his immature teenager desire through his meetings and by climbing on others’ stories, on what he spots and what he imagines, finding out his identity through curiosity, surprises and disappointments. Nuno Leonel made the closing credits.

It is said to have been introduced to decorate hotels and luxury homes, but this plant now spreads at a staggering and uncontrollable rate, suffocating the lake. A small Beninese company has managed to turn this scourge into a resource, but at the cost of exhausting labor.

Model Cecília returns to her home in Recife to spend Christmas with her very religious mother. There she finds her old friends, but also finds João, a mysterious young man with whom she may fall in love. Or is it perhaps the effect of a strange green potion that he offers her during a party?
In an explosion of genre cinema, approached with a rare balance of elegance and camp, André Antônio’s film unfolds like a fulminating and fulminated drag performance, reconfirming Brazil as a country of very fertile queer cinema. The uncanny of biblical mythology (in reference to the title figure, Salomé) permeates the spaces of a colourful but contaminated world, attractive but self-destructive, in which horror, fantasy, thriller and comedy have lost all boundaries.

In a Georgian village by the Black Sea, the sudden suicide of Eliko, a reclusive man, disrupts the community's facade of harmony. His estranged granddaughter, Moe, returns from Tbilisi to arrange his funeral, only to uncover a long-concealed secret from the village’s entrenched homophobia: Eliko's 22-year relationship with Amnon, the local bar owner.
Wet Sand is a poignant exploration of the consequences of desires’ repression. Elene Naveriani's restrained direction, enriched by Agnesh Pakozdi's evocative cinematography, captures the suffocating atmosphere of the village and the inner turmoil of its inhabitants, a testimony of the resilience of marginalized individuals and of the transformative potential of the identity – under the sexual, civic and political point of view. A quiet yet powerful commentary on love, loss, and the pursuit of authenticity.
