Produced for Britain’s Channel 4 in 1984, Bright Eyes is an illuminating and seminal work in understanding the historical and cultural dimensions of the AIDS crisis. The film by British filmmaker and activist Stuart Marshall focuses on the media representation of the early years of the epidemic by examining the elements that contributed to the journalistic narrative of a “gay plague”, and thus the proliferation of homophobic and discriminatory prejudices.
Looking at AIDS within the framework of a broader account of the relationship between homosexuality and disease and the historical continuity of its persecution, Marshall employs a hybrid and essayistic device, including reflections, scientific studies, interviews and an excursus on the figure of Magnus Hirschfeld and on Nazi Germany, and elaborating a lucid examination of the stigmatising context of the epidemic.

With Une chambre en ville, Jacques Demy returns to the lyrical tragedy that made Les Parapluies de Cherbourg an enduring masterpiece. But here the colors are darker, the music more anguished, and the fate more inexorable. While Michel Colombier's score eschews the melodic warmth of Michel Legrand, Demy exploits his obsession with the mechanics of fate, which looks like as much a choreograph as the director, making the camera slow as a dancer and making it stop as with a gunshot. Color, costume, and architecture are not mere backdrops, they are emotional topographies.

The 1921 sailors’ rebellion from Kronstadt is seen by many, especially anarchists and anti-communists, as a canonical act of political resistance. Led by Stepan Petrichenko, pro-communist sailors and civilians from the port town of Kronstadt rebelled against the authoritarian politics of the Bolshevik rule (“Power to the Soviets, not to the parties” being one of their slogans). Their insurrection, however, was brutally repressed by their own comrades from the Red Army at the order of Trotsky.
In his Maggots and Men, Cary Cronenwett reimagines the struggle of Petrichenko and his comrades from Kronstadt involving over 100 trans performers in his queer speculation of history: as such, the struggle for justice is embodied by trans bodies, not only connecting them with the history of revendicating rights, but also challenging the understanding of masculinity. A parody of Eisenstein.

Humankind is heading towards a pandemic that is making it sink into darkness. In 2017, Rafaela, the product of Angela’s fantasy, takes a journey to discover her own spirituality, taking inspiration from the texts of Simone Weil. In 2038, the now grown-up Ruben relives his parents’ past while discovering, in a cave, the extraordinary treasure of a mysterious man named Telmo: models and statues that tell the entire human history of wars.
The prophetic trilogy by Pinto and Leonel, written before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, travels through sidereal spaces and theological and linguistic reflections to discover the mystery that lies between darkness and light, and allowing the invisible to reveal itself as in a series of mystical apparitions.

It is therefore the case that Hadi also understands well what this unexpected fact is, that he understands it as much as she does, that he understands it physically.
A film of strong cinematic gestures, which begins with an “expulsion” and ends with an “inserion”. Radical in immortalizing the man-woman relationship and the need to discuss the sexual paradigm that rules it. The questions about masculinity raised by the screenplay by Hoda Taheri and Boris Hadžija are not trivial questions of curiosity, they are age-old and problematic dilemmas.

There is a small shop in Palermo, between the Ballarò neighbourhood and Via Roma, where bags, clothes and dreams are sewn. It is Quir Fattoamano by Massimo Milani and Gino Campanella, a shop that is also a meeting place for the Palermo’s LGBTQIAP+ community, a crossroads of people and identities that enrich their daily lives through exchange, advice, and above all jokes. Vivian Bellina and Charlie Abbadessa are just two of the many who go to Quir in order to ask others (and themselves) the correct questions. The same questions that the actor Ernesto Tomasini asks himself too during his forced return to the Sicilian capital to assist his sick mother.
These souls – “pure bodies, simple realities” – are not held together by some ideological or aprioristic reasons. If they are political, they are so beyond parties. It is something spontaneous, as much as it is the way Nicola Bellucci manages to bring them together in the movie, between anti-stereotypical revelations and both social and anti-social claims because society is tight in every possible sense and it is time that we recognize ourselves as “simple realities” to be able to work towards true freedom. Through gestures, through words, through a film.

How many of our daily actions do we ask ourselves the real why? Especially if you are male, and if your appearance is taken as so neutral that it does not represent a disguise, but a simple inevitability of things. A female gaze invites men to ask themselves these whys.
The more bare and evidente the film set, the more Chiara Guastella in Appunti sugli uomini can recontextualize the superficial masculinity of her subjects as in a performance, to make them the object of a shot. From the absolute artificiality of a place of representation we therefore arrive at the truth of a pose that in reality men have every day, even when the world around them does not seem like a film set: being male is a construction.

Laura Morante’s first film as a film actress is a grotesque photograph of Milan in the 1980s, a reportage filtered by Mariangela Melato’s drama: her Marta melts bourgeois certainties in a chaotic broth of people and follies, that brings her closer to the true reality of a marginal world but also brings her closer to memories, recollections and images that perhaps exist or perhaps not. Giuseppe Bertolucci’s direction fantastically tells this and other doubts.

[eng]
Set in Vienna, the film centers around 12-year-old Anna, who lives with her deaf mother. Anna’s life is marked by difference – economic, social, communicative. She feels like an outsider at her new school and within a world that quietly reinforces heteronormative, middle-class ideals. Her friendship with Mara, a classmate living alone with her queer parent, becomes a point of resonance. Their relationship brims with the intensity and ambiguity so common in queer youth experience, a kind of emotional intimacy that feels truer than any label.
Lehner refuses to rush these characters into boxes. Instead, she lets their connection unfold with subtlety, giving the audience room to recognize the queer textures in their bond. Anna’s difference isn’t just about class or her mother’s disability, it’s about otherness, about the formative experience of watching the world and not fully recognizing yourself in it. Lehner shows us a girl navigating systems that don’t quite fit: not just school or friendship, but language itself. Anna's refusal to normalize turns into the creation of a meaning outside dominant norms and the insistence on being understood on her own terms.

There is a man, who is perhaps a ghost, who wanders around a mysterious and dark city. He meets different men, has sex, discusses who he is, the past and the future. At each meeting, however, he introduces himself with a different name, says he has a different job: each time the identity of the previous lover is exhibited.
The fascinating third feature film by Hong Kong director Jun Li is a metropolitan landscape that aspires to intimacy but still never fully manages to grasp the mystery of its protagonist, a vampire of personalities, a melancholic creature capable of existing only in a fragmented contemporary world. And the tension is oppressive, because the real recurring question is whether this man, unrecognizable except for his ambiguity, can truly bond with other human beings.

Tbilisi, 2024. As mass protests erupt against the revived “Foreign Agents” law, a group of young Georgian people navigates the blurred lines between political resistance and personal becoming. Among them there are acting students like Tina and Luka, along with filmmaker Tiku Kobiashvili. What emerges is neither a straightforward political documentary nor a coming-of-age tale – but a living, breathing portrait of a generation in flux. Tina and Luka face the pressures of conformity while questioning deeper ideals: Who do I want to be? What does it mean to belong?
The camera is not an outsider, but a trusted presence, political witness and tender portraitist of the most intimate moments of shared joy. With immediacy and radical honesty, the film captures the collective spirit of young people resisting not only a political system, but the hierarchies and binaries that very system imposes.

The filmmaker transforms a family Handycam, once used for home videos, into a medium for introspection. Through a montage of personal archives like old elementary school video footage and excerpts from the older Georgian movies, the film invites viewers to re-examine gender identity formation within the conservative, post-Soviet context of Georgia. Blending personal narrative with cultural critique, the film offers a poignant exploration of selfhood, compared with the limits of societal norms. Mariam Elene Gomelauri was clearly inspired by the 90s video that becomes not only an aesthetic source but also a lens through which she can question how non-binary gender is perceived in a still conservative society, very nearly addressing the video-essay format and exploring the self with bravery and sensitivity.

Gabriel is in a romantic relationship with a transgender woman, Amaia, who lives in the suburbs of Tbilisi, but the current political and social context does not allow him to openly express his love.
Elene Naveriani delivers a singular work where the political seeps into the intimate. The title evokes “anasyrma,” a ritual gesture of unveiling, a metaphor for both identity and the revelation of love. The minimalist mise-en-scène captures silences and glances, exposing the tension between Gabriel and Amaia’s love and the weight of social repression. Trans identity is approached by Naveriani without didacticism, offering a narrative in which gender identity is naturally woven into the story, by altering more than one narrative stereotype.

The father of a very poor family steals the household savings hidden under the mattress and escapes through the window. The mother furiously chases after him all the way to the museum where the man has taken refuge. At the museum, they are about to face an unexpected surprise... Otar Ioseliani filmed Akvarel during his studies at VGIK, the film institute in Moscow. In this film he experimented with vertical editing and rhythmic editing, getting inspiration from classical painting for each frame. Through an extremely meticulous and controlled process, no doubt influenced by his background in music and mathematics, the film shows an absolute rhythmic precision. And in the meantime philosophy and aesthetic of the great Georgian director become evident: the movie is a poetic and humanist reflection in which art and music, the time to live, to observe, and to think, hold a central place.
