[ita]

In the late 1990s, in a dilapidated theater in the heart of Palermo, Carlo Cecchi is working on a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the second play in his Shakespearean trilogy, translated by the poet Patrizia Cavalli. Director Francesca Comencini – who sees Cecchi as the last representative of an Italy not subservient to the media and Berlusconi’s power – decides to follow him and is allowed to film the show’s rehearsals, on the condition that she does it all on her own and with discretion. The magic of theater breathes new life into the ruins of the Teatro Garibaldi, and the warehouses of the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo, brought to life by a group of young actors and actresses led by one of the most important theater directors of the century, seem to embody the dream of a possible moral and civil reconstruction in the aftermath of the 1992 mafia massacres.
Co-produced by French television and long out of print, Francesca Comencini’s documentary is an ode to the Italy of poets, grace, and art, but also a film about theatrical work and the absolute interpenetration between the play and its surroundings, to redeem a community, a city, and with them, perhaps, the entire country from a long night.
