While there, he started shooting what was to become Imagining October, a splendid, ineffable, anguishing meditation on the artistic, sexual, political self in the world: on Eisenstein in Stalinist Soviet Union, a genius filmmaker, a devoted propagandist who fell out of Soviet grace; on himself in Thatcherist England, constantly frustrated and out of work for not submitting to the expectations of the capital; of a painter performed by John Watkiss, working lustfully in his studio on a Socialist Realist military tableau showing a homoerotic scene of comradeship between soldiers; on the soldiers themselves, undressing their military uniform, stripping off their compromise to the world.
