Elly e Dixie si riconoscono dopo una vita per riuscire a fraintendersi sotto nuove luci. Nel 2015, l’immagine severa di Dixie, il nonno di Elly si trasforma ai suoi occhi; il suo coming out come gay con la nipote queer dà inizio a una nuova stagione della loro relazione, scritta nella loro corrispondenza. Due anni dopo, Elly parte da Berlino per fargli visita in Michigan, dove registra la potenza della pratica del “travestirsi”, e decide di farlo insieme a Dixie. Il desiderio di Elly, di giocare con i corpi e le estetiche di genere, non smuove le stesse pulsioni e fantasie di Dixie: la loro distanza si misura in decine di anni.
Il documentario di Lilli Strakerjahn ed Elly Jarvis dipinge un ritratto familiare intimo e non scevro di contraddizioni. Nelle dinamiche tra nonno e nipote, si mostrano i riavvicinamenti e le separazioni che opera il “queer”, che accoglie esperienze provenienti da luoghi e temporalità molteplici.

Elly and Dixie reconnect after a lifetime apart, only to misunderstand each other in a new light. In 2015, the stern image of Dixie, Elly’s grandfather, is transformed before her eyes; his coming out as gay to his queer granddaughter ushers in a new chapter in their relationship, chronicled in their correspondence. Two years later, Elly leaves Berlin to visit him in Michigan, and there she witnesses the power of the “cross-dressing” practice and decides she will do it with Dixie. Elly’s desire to play with bodies and gender aesthetics does not stir the same impulses and fantasies in Dixie: their distance is measurable in decades.
The documentary by Lilli Strakerjahn and Elly Jarvis paints an intimate family portrait that is not without contradictions. In the dynamics between grandfather and granddaughter, it reveals the closeness and separation brought about by “queer” that has embraced experiences from multiple places and times.
