Il ritorno alla regia di Ado Arrietta è una fiaba che prende la forma di un gioco, oltre a essere un elogio al cinema e alla sua capacità magica e immaginifica di trasmutazione del tempo. Il principe Egon di Letonia, un giovane dandy dedito unicamente alla sua batteria, è ossessionato dall’idea di poter risvegliare dal suo lungo sonno la Bella Addormentata. Aiutato dalla fata Gwendoline e dal suo precettore Gérard, Egon attraverserà il bosco incantato che circonda il regno, dove la principessa e tutto il suo reame sono immersi in un sonno che li sospende nel passato. Seguendo la grazia e la levità delle danze che si ripetono in più scene del film, Arrietta ci invita a entrare nello splendore atemporale del regno della Bella Addormentata, e lo fa tramite dei meravigliosi tableaux vivants, nella rappresentazione di amori che nascono o si ritrovano e reami che tornano alla vita. Fedele a uno sperimentalismo che oggi sembra al contempo nuovo e desueto, come il doppio binario temporale del suo racconto, la fiaba di Arrietta diverte e incanta.
Ado Arrietta’s comeback as a director is a fairy tale that takes the form of a game, and an eulogy to cinema with its magical and imaginative ability to transmute time. Prince Egon of Letonia, a young dandy dedicated solely to his drums, is obsessed with the idea of finding Sleeping Beauty and breaking her spell. With the help of fairy Gwendoline and her tutor Gérard, Egon will cross the enchanted forest that surrounds the kingdom, where the princess and her whole realm fell into a very deep sleep that withholds them in the past. Following the grace and the levity of the dances that are repeated in several scenes of the film, Arrietta invites us to enter the timeless splendor of Sleeping Beauty’s kingdom, and he does so through wonderful tableaux vivants, depicting love stories and realms that come back to life. Faithful to an experimentalism that today seems both new and obsolete, with this two-track approach of his story, Arrietta’s fairy tale amuses and enchants.

Ado Arrietta è uno sceneggiatore e regista spagnolo, considerato tra i pionieri del cinema indipendente europeo. Comincia la carriera cinematografica girando i cortometraggi El crimen de la pirindola (1965) e Imitación del ángel (1966). Trasferitosi a Parigi nel 1967, Arrieta gira i lungometraggi Le jouet criminel (1969), Le château de Pointilly (1972), Las intrigas de Sylvia Couski (1974), Tam Tam (1976), Flammes (1978), Grenouilles (1983), Delirios de amor (TV Movie, 1989), Merlín (1990) y Narciso (2004). Prima di girare Belle Dormant, il suo ultimo lavoro è stato il mediometraggio Vacanza permanente (2006), premiato al Festival Internazionale del cinema di Lucca.
Ado Arrietta is a Spanish screenwriter and director, considered as one of the pioneers of the European independent cinema. He began his cinematographic career making two short films: El crimen de la pirindola (1965) and Imitación del ángel (1966). After moving to Paris in 1967, Arrietta shot Le jouet criminel (1969), Le château de Pointilly (1972), Las intrigas de Sylvia Couski (1974), Tam Tam (1976), Flammes (1978), Grenouilles (1983), Delirios de amor (TV Movie, 1989), Merlín (1990) y Narciso (2004). Before Sleeping Beauty, his latest work has been the medium length film Vacanza permanente (2006), that was awarded at the Lucca International Film Festival.
