Il diciassettenne Mathieu Reymond si risveglia in ospedale dopo essere stato violentato e torturato da un uomo conosciuto mentre faceva autostop. Una volta tornato a casa, la sua vita quotidiana e quella di tutti coloro che lo circondano continua apparentemente a scorrere come prima, e tanto i suoi familiari quanto gli insegnanti non sembrano sapersi confrontare direttamente col ragazzo e col suo trauma. Come in una sorta di sogno lucido, Mathieu mette insieme gli sprazzi di memoria di quella notte e ricostruisce gradualmente i tratti del suo aggressore, aiutato dalla polizia locale. Nella semplicità della rappresentazione Baier dà forma all’orrore, utilizzando un linguaggio pulito e onirico, senza lasciare spazio a eccessi morbosi.
Seventeen-year-old Mathieu Reymond wakes up in a hospital after having been raped and tortured by a man he had known while hitchhiking. Once back home, his everyday life as well the life of those surrounding him, seems to continue as before, and both his family and teachers do not seem to know how to directly confront the boy and his trauma. As if it were a lucid dream, Mathieu, with the help of the local police, puts together the flashes of memory of that night and gradually reconstructs the traits of his mugger. In the simplicity of the representation, Baier evokes horror using a clean and oneiric language, and leaving no room for morbid excesses.

È nato a Losanna nel 1975. Dal 1996 ha iniziato a lavorare come assistente alla regia per cinema e pubblicità. Dal 2001 è direttore del dipartimento di cinema presso l’École cantonale d’art de Lausanne. È tra i cofondatori della Bande à part Films production. Esordisce alla regiafirmando numerosi documentari, tra cui Celui au Pasteur (ma vision perso nelle des choses) e La Parade (Notre Histoire), per poi passare ai lungometraggi di finzione con Garçon Stupide cui seguiranno Un autre Homme e Low Cost (Claude Jutra), selezionati dal Festival di Locarno. Nel 2013 presenta Les Grandes Ondes (à l'Ouest), secondo capitolo della tetralogia sull’Europa dopo Comme des Voleurs (à l'Est) del 2006, e nel 2015 La Vanité. Nel 2016 è l’ospite della sezione Presenze della sesta edizione del Sicilia Queer filmfest. Nel 2018 dirige Prénom : Mathieu che fa parte della serie Ondes de choc, quattro pellicole realizzate da quattro registi svizzeri su noti fatti di cronaca nera avvenuti nel paese elvetico.
He was born in Lausanne in 1975. He began working in 1996 as an assistant director on films and commercials. Since 2001 he became the director of the film department at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne. He was co-founder of the Bande à part Films. He made his debut as a director with many documentaries, including Celui au Pasteur (ma vision personelle des choses) and La Parade (Notre Histoire); he then moved on to feature narrative films, such as Garçon Stupide, followed by Un autre Homme and Low Cost (Claude Jutra), both selected by Locarno Film Festival. In 2013, he presented Les Grandes Ondes (à l'Ouest), the second part of the series on Europe after Comme des Voleurs (à l'Est) in 2006, and in 2015 La Vanité. In 2016, on the sixth edition of the Sicilia Queer filmfest, the section Presenze was dedicated to him. In 2018 he directed First Name: Mathieu, that is part of the Shock Waves series, four films directed by four Swiss directors on well-known crime stories in Switzerland.
