Gianni Amelio nasce in provincia di Catanzaro nel 1945. Dopo il suo trasferimento a Roma negli anni Sessanta comincia la sua formazione come aiuto regista sui set di Gianni Puccini, Vittorio De Seta, Liliana Cavani, collaborando anche a numerose produzioni televisive e spot pubblicitari. Il suo film d’esordio al cinema è stato Colpire al cuore del 1982 presentato alla Mostra cinematografica di Venezia. Il ladro di bambini (1992) resta il suo più grande successo che gli permetterà di vincere lo stesso anno il Gran Premio della Giuria al Festival di Cannes. Due anni dopo dirige Lamerica e nel 1998 Così ridevano con il quale si aggiudicherà il Leone d’oro al Festival di Venezia nello stesso anno. Ritorna alla Mostra cinematografica di Venezia qualche anno dopo con il film Le chiavi di casa (2004) che ancora una volta esplora il rapporto padre-figlio. Tra i film più significativi degli ultimi anni La stella che non c'è (2006), il documentario Felice chi è diverso (2014) e La tenerezza (2017) con cui ha vinto numerosi premi. Dal 2008 al 2012 Gianni Amelio è stato inoltre direttore del Torino Film Festival.

Gianni Amelio was born near Catanzaro in 1945. After he moved to Rome in the 60’s he began his formation as an assistant director on Gianni Puccini, Vittorio De Seta, Liliana Cavalli’s sets, collaborating with several tv productions and commercials too. His cinema debut film was Blow to the Heart in 1982, showed at the Venice Film Festival. The Stolen Children (1992) remains his greatest success letting him win the Gran Prix of Cannes in the same year. Two years later he directed Lamerica and in 1998 The Way We Laughed, winning with it the Venice Golden Lion in the same year. He went back to the Venice FIlm Festival a few years later with the film The Keys to the House (2004) that once again explores the father and son relationship. Among his most significant films of the past few years: The Missing Star (2006), the Felice chi è diverso documentary (2014), and La Tenerezza (2017) which he won several awards with. From 2008 to 2012 Gianni Amelio was besides the Torino Film Festival Director.
