Il personaggio di Emily Dickinson, reso popolare dopo la sua morte, è quello di una zitella solitaria, una persona timida, troppo sensibile per questo mondo. Questo film esplora il suo lato vivace e irriverente, nascosto per anni, e in particolare la relazione romantica di Emily con un'altra donna, la cognata Susan. Sono le poesie di Dickinson a testimoniare una vita ampiamente vissuta e sentita. Madeleine Olnek restituisce questo aspetto con un ritratto fresco e divertente. Non è la storia di un amore tragico ma di due donne che escogitano modi per vedersi, che si abbracciano con passione in cucina prima di tornare ai loro doveri. Susan chiede ad Emily di leggerle le sue poesie. Emily tira fuori pezzi di carta dalla sua cintura o dal suo chignon. È letteralmente “ricoperta di poesia”. Emily Dickinson’s persona, popularized since her death, became that of a reclusive spinster – a delicate wallflower, too sensitive for this world. This film explores her vivacious, irreverent side that was covered up for years — most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, her sister in law, Susan. It is Dickinson's poems that record a life widely lived and felt. Madeleine Olnek portrays this aspect through a fresh and entertaining portrait. This isn't a story of a tragic love but that of two women figuring out ways to see each other, embracing madly in the kitchen before running back to their duties. Susan checks in with Emily every day, asking to read whatever she's working on. Emily pulls a batch of poems out of her belt or her bun. She is literally “covered in poetry”. Finally Olnek's approach gives Emily Dickinson and her poems room to breathe.

Drammaturga e regista di New York, si è laureata alla New York University con un BFA in Recitazione. Ha conseguito un master in Cinematografia presso la Columbia University, dove ha ricevuto la prestigiosa borsa di studio William Goldman per la sceneggiatura. Ha ricevuto poi una borsa di studio della Fondazione Guggenheim per il suo terzo lungometraggio, Wild Nights With Emily (2018), presentato in anteprima al SXSW 2018. Il suo film d'esordio Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same (2011) è stato presentato in anteprima al Sundance 2011 e proiettato al MoMA e alla Viennale. Il suo secondo lungometraggio, The Foxy Merkins (2013), è stato proiettato al Sundance, al BAM Cinemafest e al Lincoln Center. I suoi pluripremiati cortometraggi Countertransference (2008) e Hold Up (2006), sono stati selezionati al Sundance e Olnek è stata premiata come miglior regista femminile di cortometraggi nel 2009 dalle Women In Film di Los Angeles. She is a New York City based playwright and filmmaker, she graduated from NYU with a BFA in Drama. She has an MFA in Film from Columbia University, where she was awarded the prestigious William Goldman Screenwriting Fellowship. She was then awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for her third feature film, Wild Nights With Emily (2018), which premiered at SXSW 2018. Her debut feature Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same (2011) premiered at Sundance 2011 and screened at MoMA and The Viennale. Her second feature The Foxy Merkins (2013), included screenings at Sundance 2014, BAM Cinemafest e al Lincoln Center. Her award-winning and widely screened comedy shorts, Countertransference (2008), and Hold Up (2006), were official selections of Sundance and Olnek was awarded best female short film director at Sundance in 2009, by LA’s Women In Film organization. As a playwright, Olnek is one of the authors of A Practical Handbook for The Actor (Vintage Books, 1986), a widely used acting textbook.
