Traveling around Florence, Stendhal was overstimulated by the beauty that lurked in every corner, until he felt woozy. The Birth of Venus, Michelangelo’s David can provoke what the psychologist Graziella Magherini has defined the Stendhal Syndrome, referring precisely to this famous historical precedent. Rappaport explores the sensual aspects of this psychological distress, recalling the ecstatic spasm (almost onanistic) of repetition, focusing on the most distinctive type of shot in classical Hollywood cinema: the close-up. Joan Crawford’s close-up in Humoresque is for him as destabilizing as the Renaissance statuary, those of the young Turhan Bey make him swoon. Beyond the admiration that revolves around the intellect, it is the body that finds nourishment, that is irrigated and aroused and, at the same time, starts to experience senescence.
