Lettre à ma sœur racconta la storia dell'assassinio di Nabila Djahnine, sorella della regista e presidentessa dell'associazione "Thighri N'tmettouth" (Grido di donna), assassinata il 15 febbraio 1995 a Tizi-Ouzou, una cittadina della Cabilia a cento chilometri da Algeri. Nel 1994 Nabila scrisse una lettera alla sorella per raccontarle dell'escalation di violenza, della repressione, degli assassinii, delle magre speranze e del suo sgomento per l’impossibilità ad agire, vissuta durante quegli anni di piombo. Dieci anni dopo l'assassinio di Nabila, la regista ritorna in quei luoghi per girare un film, raccontare l’accaduto e osservare le trasformazioni della città e della sua gente, nel tentativo di capire le ragioni per le quali il dialogo sia di fatto diventato impossibile e sembri rimasto spazio soltanto per l’omicidio e il massacro.

Lettre à ma sœur tells the story of the assassination of Nabila Djahnine, sister of the filmmaker and president of the association "Thighri N'tmettouth" (Cry of a Woman), who was murdered on February 15, 1995, in Tizi-Ouzou, a small town in Kabylia, a hundred kilometers from Algiers. In 1994, Nabila wrote a letter to her sister telling her about the escalation of violence, repression, assassinations, meager hopes, and her dismay at the inability to act, experienced during those years of lead. Ten years after Nabila's assassination, the filmmaker returns to those places to make a film, to tell what happened and to observe the transformations of the city and its people, in an attempt to understand the reasons why dialogue has in fact become impossible and there seems to be room left only for murder and massacre.

Nata nel 1968, è cresciuta a Béjaïa dove, fin da giovanissima, è stata coinvolta nella vita culturale e militante. È femminista, poetessa, regista di documentari, programmatrice e formatrice cinematografica.Nel 2003 ha co-fondato i Rencontres Cinématographiques de Béjaia. Nel 2007 ha creato l'associazione Cinéma Mémoire per organizzare laboratori di creazione di film documentari in Algeria e per fornire un quadro di riferimento ai giovani che desiderano formarsi al cinema documentario e realizzare il loro primo film.È autrice di Outre-Mort (2003, edizione El Ghazali) e di Fragments de la maison (2015, edizione Bruno Doucey). Ha diretto una decina di film, tra cui Lettre à ma sœur e Avant de franchir la ligne d'horizon. Nel 2012 ha ricevuto il premio internazionale della Fondazione Prince Claus (Paesi Bassi) per il suo lavoro.

Born in 1968, she grew up in Béjaïa where, from a very young age, she is involved in cultural and militant life. She is a feminist, poet, documentary filmmaker, film programmer and trainer. In 2003 she co-founded the Rencontres Cinématographiques de Béjaia. In 2007, she found the association Cinéma Mémoire to organize workshops about documentary filmmaking in Algeria and to provide a framework for young people who wish to train in documentary filmmaking and make their first film. She is the author of Outre-Mort (2003, El Ghazali) and Fragments de la maison (2015, Bruno Doucey). She has directed a dozen films, including Lettre à ma sœur and Avant de franchir la ligne d'horizon. In 2012 he received the Prince Claus Foundation (Netherlands) International Prize for his work.
