Una storia d’amore e di giovinezza, a partire dalle lettere che Ingeborg Bachmann e Paul Celan, due fra le più grandi figure letterarie e poetiche del Novecento, si scambiano per diciannove lunghi anni, tra Vienna, Parigi e altre città d’Europa. Ruth Beckermann convoca due giovani interpreti in uno studio di registrazione e li mette a confronto con quel carteggio: devono leggerlo ad alta voce, ma così facendo diventano per qualche istante un po’ Paul e Ingeborg anche loro. Forse stanno per innamorarsi, forse riescono a farci innamorare. Le loro parole d’amore diventano sentimenti, esitazioni, incertezze incarnate. E il dispositivo messo in campo rimette in discussione il tempo, lo spazio e i concetti stessi di possibilità e impossibilità, chiedendoci di mettere tra parentesi, per un’ora e mezza, la nostra volontaria sospensione dell’incredulità e vivere insieme a loro questo idillio sognato e contrastato.

A story of love and youth, starting from the letters that Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, two of the greatest literary and poetic figures of the 20th century, exchanged for nineteen long years, between Vienna, Paris and other European cities. Ruth Beckermann summons two young performers to a recording studio and confronts them with that correspondence: they have to read it aloud, but in doing so they become for a few moments a little Paul and Ingeborg themselves. Perhaps they are about to fall in love, perhaps they manage to make us fall in love. Their words of love become feelings, hesitations, embodied uncertainties. And the device deployed calls into question time, space and the very concepts of possibility and impossibility, asking us to put our voluntary suspension of disbelief in brackets for an hour and a half and live with them this dreamed and thwarted idyll.

Nata a Vienna nel 1952, è regista, scrittrice e documentarista. Ha studiato storia dell’arte, giornalismo e fotografia fra Austria, Israele e Stati Uniti, e ha insegnato in varie università del mondo fra cui Salisburgo e Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Il suo primo documentario risale alla fine degli anni Settanta e dà inizio a una corposa produzione che arriva fino a oggi. I suoi film viaggiano fra vari festival del mondo (Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Berlino), e alcuni ricevono premi importanti come il Vienna Film Award (Jenseits des Krieges, 1996), l’Encounters del Festival di Berlino (MUTZENBACHER, 2022) e il premio del Filmmaker Film Festival di Milano (il suo film di finzione Die Geträumten, 2016) che le dedica una retrospettiva nel 2022.

Born in Vienna in 1952, she is film director, writer and documentarian. She studied history of arts, journalism and photography in Austria, Israel and USA, and she has been a teacher in various universities of the world such as Salzburg and Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Her first documentary feature dates back to the end of 70s, and it sets off the start of a rich production that continues still today. Her movies are screened in many international film festivals (Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Berlin), and some of them receive important awards such as the Vienna Film Award (East of War, 1996), the Encounters Best Film at Berlin Film Festival (MUTZENBACHER, 2022) and the Main Prize of the Filmmaker Film Festival in Milan (for her fiction feature The Dreamed Ones, 2016), which dedicates a retrospective to her in 2022.
