All’inizio del Novecento un romanzo pornografico di autore ignoto intitolato Josefine Mutzenbacher, ovvero la storia di una prostituta viennese da lei stessa narrata circola segretamente tra lettrici e soprattutto lettori di lingua tedesca desiderosi di addentrarsi nelle fantasie, nei misteri e nei segreti dell’universo erotico e sessuale. Ruth Beckermann organizza un casting in cui un centinaio di uomini di ogni età si confrontano con le parole, i pensieri e i temi suscitati da questa donna del secolo scorso: il risultato è quello di una straordinaria indagine sul desiderio e sui tabù, un ritratto di gruppo emozionante che prova a decostruire ogni immagine stereotipata della mascolinità, giocando con l’ambiguità con spirito di autentica curiosità.

At the beginning of XX century a pornographic novel written by an anonymous author, Josefine Mutzenbacher or the story of a Viennese prostitute narrated by herself, secretly circulates among German women and mostly men readers attracted by exploring fantasies, mysteries and secrets of the erotic and sexual universe. Ruth Beckermann organizes a casting of about one hundred men of every age to make them confront with words, thoughts and themes coming from this woman of the previous century: the result is an extraordinary survey on desire and taboos, an emotional group portrait that tries to deconstruct any stereotyped image of masculinity, playing with uncertainties with an esprit of authentic curiosity.

Nata a Vienna nel 1952, è regista, scrittrice e documentarista. Ha studiato storia dell’arte, giornalismo e fotografia fra Austria, Israele e Stati Uniti, e ha insegnato in varie università del mondo fra cui Salisburgo e Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Il suo primo documentario risale alla fine degli anni Settanta e dà inizio a una corposa produzione che arriva fino a oggi. I suoi film viaggiano fra vari festival del mondo (Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Berlino), e alcuni ricevono premi importanti come il Vienna Film Award (Jenseits des Krieges, 1996), l’Encounters del Festival di Berlino (MUTZENBACHER, 2022) e il premio del Filmmaker Film Festival di Milano (il suo film di finzione Die Geträumten, 2016) che le dedica una retrospettiva nel 2022.

Born in Vienna in 1952, she is film director, writer and documentarian. She studied history of arts, journalism and photography in Austria, Israel and USA, and she has been a teacher in various universities of the world such as Salzburg and Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Her first documentary feature dates back to the end of 70s, and it sets off the start of a rich production that continues still today. Her movies are screened in many international film festivals (Viennale, Cinéma du Réel, Berlin), and some of them receive important awards such as the Vienna Film Award (East of War, 1996), the Encounters Best Film at Berlin Film Festival (MUTZENBACHER, 2022) and the Main Prize of the Filmmaker Film Festival in Milan (for her fiction feature The Dreamed Ones, 2016), which dedicates a retrospective to her in 2022.
