L’attrice Lora Meredith assume come governante Assie Johnson, una donna nera che si occuperà di crescere le figlie di entrambe, Susie e Sarah Jane. Due madri, due figlie e ancora una volta vite che si intrecciano, con le loro illusioni e gli inganni offerti dai modelli sociali. Ultimo lungometraggio di Sirk prima del ritiro, remake del film omonimo di John M. Stahl (1934), per Fassbinder è «un grande film folle sulla vita e sulla morte; e sull’America», e la crudeltà sta nel fatto che tutti i personaggi hanno ragione, ma che nessuno potrà aiutarli «a meno di non cambiare il mondo. Per questo motivo abbiamo tutti pianto al cinema: perché è così difficile cambiare il mondo».

The actress Lola Meredith hires the black woman Assie Johnson as housekeeper: she’ll take care of her and Lola’s daughters, Susie and Sarah Jane. Two mothers, two daughters, and once again lives that intertwine, with their illusions and the deceptions of the social stereotypes. The last feature film by Sirk before retirement, remake of John M. Stahl’s Imitation of Life (1934), according to Fassbinder ‘a great mad film about life and death; and about America.’ Cruelty is due to the fact that all the characters are right, but anyone can help them ‘unless they could change the world. That’s the reason we all cry in the movie theatre: because it is so difficult to change the world.’

Maestro incontrastato del melodramma hollywoodiano degli anni Cinquanta (ma non solo), grande scopritore e direttore di attori e attrici che hanno fatto la storia del cinema, la sua opera è stata oggetto di costante di ammirazione e oblio ma anche di incomprensioni e grandi fraintendimenti. Nato nel 1897 ad Amburgo, Germania, col nome di Dietlef Sierck, lascia la Germania all’alba della Seconda guerra mondiale girando per l’Europa e arrivando infine in America. Tra i grandi e iconici capolavori si annoverano Lo specchio della vita, Secondo amore, Tempo di vivere, Magnifica ossessione e Come le foglie al vento.

Undisputed master of ’50s Hollywood melodrama (but not only that), great discover and director of actors and actresses that made the history of cinema, his work has been long admired and forgotten but also mistaken and greatly misunderstood. Born in 1897 in Hamburg, Germany, under the name of Dietlef Sierck, he leaves Germany at the dawn of Second World War travelling through Europe and at last arriving in America. Among his greatest and iconic masterpieces are Imitation of Life, All That Heaven Allows, A Time to Love and a Time to Die, Magnificent Obsession and Written on the Wind.
