Pubblicato negli Stati Uniti nel 1971, il volume Omosessuale. Oppressione e liberazione di Dennis Atlman, scrive Lorenzo Bernini nell’introduzione, è “uno dei primi libri legati ai nascenti movimenti di liberazione gay che costituiscono, assieme al pensiero femminista, lesbico, butch, trans*, Nero, chicano e working class europeo e statunitense, le radici delle teorie queer in un terreno di confine tra attivismo e università”. Tradotto nel 1974 da Arcana Editrice a cura di Alfredo Cohen, segnò tutta una generazione di attivist* italian*, per poi restare a lungo fuori catalogo. Osservatore attento e partecipe delle prime azioni del Gay Liberation Front dopo la rivolta di Stonewall, Altman vi attinge agli scritti di James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg e Kate Millett, oltre alla sua personale esperienza, e con pensiero genuinamente critico, ispirato al “freudomarxismo” rivoluzionario di Herbert Marcuse, riconosce nelle differenze presenti nel movimento un motore di trasformazione.
Dennis Altman è attualmente Vice Chancellor’s Fellow presso La Trobe University di Melbourne e promotore della Pride Foundation e degli Australian Queer Archives. È autore di numerosi altri volumi, tradotti in molte lingue, tra cui: Global Sex (2001), Queer Wars (con Jonathan Symons, 2016), Unrequited Love: Diary of an Accidental Activist (2019), God Save the Queen: The Strange Persistence of Monarchies (2021) e il romanzo Death in the Sauna (2023).

Published in the United States in 1971, the volume Homosexual. Oppression and Liberation by Dennis Altman, as Lorenzo Bernini states in the introduction, is "one of the first books linked to the nascent gay liberation movements that constitute, together with feminist, lesbian, butch, trans*, Black, Chicano and European and American working class thought, the roots of queer theories in a borderland between activism and university". Translated in 1974 by Arcana Editrice and edited by Alfredo Cohen, it marked an entire generation of Italian activists, and then remained out of print for a long time. An attentive and participating observer of the first actions of the Gay Liberation Front after the Stonewall uprising, Altman draws on the writings of James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg and Kate Millett, as well as on his own personal experience, and he recognizes an engine of transformation in the differences that are present in the movement, with a genuinely critical thought that’s inspired by the revolutionary "Freudo-Marxism" of Herbert Marcuse. Dennis Altman is currently Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at La Trobe University in Melbourne and the founder of the Pride Foundation and the Australian Queer Archives. He is the author of numerous other books, translated into many languages, including: Global Sex (2001), Queer Wars (with Jonathan Symons, 2016), Unrequited Love: Diary of an Accidental Activist (2019), God Save the Queen: The Strange Persistence of Monarchies (2021) and the novel Death in the Sauna (2023).
