Un anno nella vita dei registi Joaquim Pinto e Nuno Leonel. Il primo si sottomette a una terapia sperimentale con un farmaco contro l’HIV, subendone gli effetti collaterali psicotropi e debilitanti; il secondo lo assiste e lo affianca nella loro esistenza silenziosa nella campagna portoghese, circondati dai loro cani e dalla natura. Intanto i ricordi di un’intera carriera si affastellano, si sovrappongono, e creano un filo di inesauribile attaccamento alla vita, nonostante tutto.
Nel loro film più famoso, premiato a Locarno e proposto dal Portogallo per il Miglior Film Straniero agli Oscar del 2014, Pinto e Leonel condensano in un solo spazio la febbrile necessità di creare nuove immagini e l’essenziale prudenza di produrre solo quelle che contino. Sarebbe un film fatto di home movie e semplici riprese amatoriali se i due registi non escogitassero una vera lotta contro la morte e l’effimero.

A year in the life of the directors Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel. The former undergoes an experimental treatment against HIV with a new drugs, enduring its psychotropic and debilitating collateral effects; the latter assists him and stays by his side during their quiet existence in the Portuguese countryside, surrounded by their dogs and by nature. Meanwhile the memories of a whole career pile up, overlap, and create a thread of unfailing attachment to life, despite everything.
In their most famous film, awarded in Locarno and submitted by Portugal for the Best Foreign Picture at the 2014 Oscars, Pinto and Leonel melts in a single place the feverish need to create new images and the essential care to produce just the ones that really count. It would only be a movie made up of home movies and simple amateur footage if the two directors did not contrive a real fight against death and ephemeral.

Originario di Porto, classe 1957, ha lavorato come tecnico del suono per importanti registi sia dentro che fuori dal Portogallo. Il suo primo film da regista, Uma pedra no bolso risale al 1988, mentre il secondo, Onde bate o sol, è datato 1989. Dalla fine degli Anni Novanta le regie dei suoi film (come E agora? Lembra-me, Rabo de Peixe, Pathos Ethos Logos) sono co-firmate dal partner e poi marito Nuno Leonel, e sono presentate in festival importanti come Berlino e Locarno.

Born in Porto in 1957, he worked as a sound engineer for important directors both inside and outside Portugal. In 1988 he made his first feature film, Tall Stories, and his second feature-length film, Where The Sun Beats, dates back to 1989. Since the end of the Nineties his directorial efforts (such as What Now? Remind Me, Fish Tail, Pathos Ethos Logos) are co-signed by his partner and then husband Nuno Leonel, and they were presented in important festivals like Berlin and Locarno.
