Siamo in un loft di New York nel 1974: fuori, il traffico della metropoli; dentro, l’incontro fra la giornalista Linda Rosenkratz e il fotografo Peter Hujar. Un incontro che è avvenuto davvero, registrato su cassetta e poi trascritto in un libro, Peter Hujar’s Day. Il fotografo, di solito occhio silenzioso fra gli eventi, finalmente prende la parola, e racconta una routine che col senno di poi è straordinaria: gli incontri (Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs), le cene cinesi mangiate a casa, le telefonate, le sessioni in camera oscura.
Ira Sachs costruisce un film intorno alle parole (vere) del fotografo e della giornalista, un film che è una macchina del tempo. Hujar, morto ad appena 53 anni di AIDS, ha affrontato una vita piena di ingiustizie (furti di foto, lavori non pagati), e nel libro (così come nel film) può prendere la parola anche a fronte di una New York piena di grandi rumorose voci, di fronte alle quali lui sembra non potere nulla. Il ritratto che ne risulta è intimo, caloroso, confortevole, commovente, vivo.

We are in a New York loft in 1974: outside, the traffic of the city; inside, the meeting between journalist Linda Rosenkratz and photographer Peter Hujar. A meeting that actually happened, recorded on cassette and later transcribed in a book, Peter Hujar's Day. The photographer, usually a silent eye on events, finally speaks up, and recounts a routine that in hindsight is extraordinary: the meetings (Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs), the Chinese dinners eaten at home, the phone calls, the darkroom sessions.
Ira Sachs builds a film around the (real) words of the photographer and the journalist, a film that is a time machine. Hujar, who died at just 53 of AIDS, faced a life full of injustices (photo theft, unpaid work), and in the book (as in the film) he can speak out even in front of a city that’s full of loud voices, against which he seems powerless. The resulting portrait is intimate, warm, comfortable, moving, alive.

Nato a Memphis (Tennessee) il 21 novembre del 1965, si è laureato in Lettere e Teoria del cinema presso la Yale University. Una volta trasferitosi a New York, inizia la sua carriera da regista e sceneggiatore; il suo primo lavoro è il cortometraggio The Lady (1993), al quale seguono The Delta (1997), Forty Shades of Blue (2005), Arsenico e vecchi confetti (2007), Keep the Lights On (Teddy Award a Berlino nel 2012), I toni dell’amore (2014). Little Men è stato presentato al Sundance nel 2016 e ha aperto il Sicilia Queer filmfest nel 2017. Dopo la presentazione di Frankie (2019) nel concorso del Festival di Cannes, Passages (2023) passa al Sundance e alla sezione Panorama della Berlinale, per poi aprire il Sicilia Queer filmfest nel 2024. Peter Hujar’s Day è stato presentato al Sundance e alla Berlinale.

Born in Memphis (Tennessee) on November 21st, 1965, he graduated in Literature and Film Theory studies at Yale University. After moving to New York, he began his career as a director and screenwriter. His first work is the short film The Lady (1993), which was followed by The Delta (1997), Forty Shades of Blue (2005), Married Life (2007), Keep the Lights On (Teddy Award in Berlin, 2012) and Love Is Strange (2014). Little Men was presented at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and opened the 2017 Sicilia Queer filmfest. After the selection of Frankie (2019) in the main competition of Cannes Film Festival, Passages (2023) is screened at Sundance and Berlinale’s section Panorama, and then is the opening film of 2024 Sicilia Queer filmfest. Peter Hujar’s Day (2025) is presented at the Sundance and in Berlin.
