L'ingegnere portoghese Sérgio va in auto fino in Guinea-Bissau, ex colonia portoghese, per fare una perizia territoriale e vedere se sono soddisfatti i prerequisiti per la costruzione di una strada che avrebbe però effetti violenti e inquinanti sul territorio. Gli viene detto che deve anche sondare la reazione degli abitanti locali, ma lui va anche più a fondo di così: si unisce al gruppo di Guilherme e di Daria, facendo amicizia e forse qualcosa di più. Il problema è che girano voci sulla misteriosa morte del suo predecessore italiano, Leonardo, e il luogo diventa un cocktail di minaccia e di fascino.
Un grande mistero dunque, quello che Pedro Pinho tesse in modo appassionato nel film, come una danza ipnotica intorno a personaggi dal carisma unico e a dilemmi sui residui del colonialismo e sul rapporto fra Nord e Sud del mondo. Un’opera titanica sul privilegio e sui peccati dell’Europa.

The Portuguese engineer Sérgio drives to Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, to carry out a territorial assessment and determine whether the prerequisites are met for the construction of a road - one that would, however, have violent and polluting effects on the area. He is told that he must also examine the reaction of the local inhabitants, but he goes further than that: he joins the group of Guilherme and Daria, forming a friendship and perhaps something more. The problem is that rumors are circulating about the mysterious death of his Italian predecessor, Leonardo, and the place becomes a cocktail of threat and fascination.
A great mystery, then, the one that Pedro Pinho weaves with passion in the film, like a hypnotic dance around characters of unique allure and dilemmas concerning the remnants of colonialism and the relationship between the Global North and South. A titanic work on Europe’s privilege and its sins.

Nato a Lisbona nel 1977, si è laureato alla Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC) nel 2023, e lì si è specializzato in direzione della fotografia e regia. Il suo primo corto No Início risale alla frequentazione del corso Programa Criação e Criatividade Artística della Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation nel 2005. Al 2006 risale la fondazione di Patê Films con Luísa Homem e Maria Mire, mentre al 2008 risale la co-fondazione della compagnia di produzione Terratreme. Da allora lavora come direttore della fotografia in film di fiction e documentari. Tra i suoi lavori si segnalano Bab Sebta (2008) presentato a FID Marseille e a DocLisboa (dove vince il premio al Miglior Documentario Portoghese); A Fábrica de Nada (2017), il suo primo film di finzione, che venne selezionato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs a Cannes; O riso e a faca (2025), premio alla Miglior attrice a Un Certain Regard 2025.

Born in Lisbon in 1977, he graduated from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC) in 2023, where he specialized in cinematography and directing. His first short film, In the Beginning, dates back to his participation in the Programa Criação e Criatividade Artística course at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2005. In 2006, he co-founded Patê Films with Luísa Homem and Maria Mire, and in 2008 he co-founded Terratreme production company. Since then, he has worked as a director of photography on fiction films and documentaries. Among his notable works are Bab Sebta (2008), presented at FID Marseille and DocLisboa (where it won the award for Best Portuguese Documentary); The Factory of Nothing (2017), his first fiction film, which was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes; and I Only Rest in the Storm (2025), which received the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025.
