In un ristorante di Parigi, circondato dagli amici, Jean-François Stévenin racconta sé stesso: il cinema, Truffaut, Depardieu, Johnny, i suoi stessi film, la sua ubriachezza. E soprattutto il suo incontro con Lucette Destouches, vedova di Louis-Ferdinand Céline, la loro amicizia, il progetto cinematografico che non si è mai realizzato e che forse in quel giorno, in quel ristorante, attraverso la forza e l’umorismo del racconto, attraverso l’abitudine di Stévenin di portare sempre con sé una minuscola telecamera, in un certo senso, finirà finalmente per realizzarsi.

In a restaurant in Paris, surrounded by friends, Jean-François Stévenin tells himself: the cinema, Truffaut, Depardieu, Johnny, his own films, his drunkenness. And above all, his meeting with Lucette Destouches, widow of Louis-Ferdinand Céline, their friendship, the film project that never came to happen and that perhaps on that day, in that restaurant, through the power and the humour of the story, through Stévenin's habit of always carrying a tiny camera with him, in a certain way, will finally come true.

Nato nel 1964 a Yonne, nella regione francese Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, non riesce ad entrare a La Fémis di Parigi, ma riesce ugualmente a realizzare i suoi primi film in maniera indipendente, esordendo con il corto Qu’en savent les morts? (1991). Influenzato da Maurice Pialat e Jean Renoir, realizza il suo primo lungometraggio nel 1999, Plus qu’hier, moins que demain, che è anche la sua prima collaborazione con l’attore feticcio Pascal Cervo che lo accompagna anche per Le dernier des fous (Premio alla Miglior Regia a Locarno 2006) e Dernière Séance (Premio al Miglior Film Francese al Festival du Film di Belfort nel 2011). Realizza documentari su Jean-Claude Brisseau, Paul Vecchiali, Jean-François Stévenin e Patricia Mazuy prima di morire a 59 anni nel 2024.

Born in 1964 in Yonne, in the French region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, he failed to enter La Fémis in Paris but still managed to make his first films independently, making his debut with the short Qu’en savent les morts? (1991). Influenced by Maurice Pialat and Jean Renoir, he made his first feature film in 1999, More than Yesterday, which was also his first collaboration with the actor Pascal Cervo who also returned with him for Demented (awarded for Best Directing in Locarno 2006) and Last Screening (awarded for Best French Film at the Festival du Film in Belfort in 2011). He made documentaries on Jean-Claude Brisseau, Paul Vecchiali, Jean-Paul Stévenin and Patricia Mazuy before dying at 59 in 2024.
