Claude Loir è un signore gentile di poco più di 80 anni, e nella sua vita ha attraversato la storia della Francia da figlio povero e poco amato, omosessuale gaudente, gigolò, attore porno, essere in cerca d'amore.
Sébastien Lifshitz lo intervista aggiungendo un ulteriore capitolo alla sua indagine sulla storia dell'omosessualità in Francia, da prima della depenalizzazione fino a oggi, attraverso il ritratto di figure ormai anziane (come in Les vies de Thérèse del 2016, o Les invisibles del 2012). Claude Loir è un narratore ammaliante, oltre che un uomo affascinante, gentile, bello: la vita gli offre delle possibilità e lui le segue, le asseconda. Lifshitz gestisce con mano collaudata l'alternanza tra i vari archivi e la singola testimonianza del protagonista, passando dalla provincia del sud negli anni Cinquanta a Cannes, città dell'omosessualità, poi da Parigi e il '68, coi set porno, fino al periodo della presidenza di Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.

Claude Loir is a kind gentleman in his early eighties, and throughout his life he has moved through French history as a poor and little-loved son, a joyful homosexual, a gigolo, a porn actor, and a man in search of love.
Sébastien Lifshitz interviews him, adding another chapter to his exploration of the history of homosexuality in France, from the period before decriminalisation to the present day, through portraits of elderly figures (as in The Lives of Thérèse from 2016, or Les invisibles from 2012). Claude Loir is a captivating storyteller, as well as a fascinating, kind and handsome man: life offers him possibilities, and he follows them, he embraces them. Lifshitz handles with experienced ease the alternation between archival footage and the protagonist’s single testimony, moving from the southern provinces in the 1950s to Cannes, a city associated with homosexuality, then from Paris and May ’68, with porn sets, to the period of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing’s presidency.

Nato nel 1968, è un regista e sceneggiatore francese. Dal 1987 al 1992 ha frequentato l’École du Louvre e si è laureato in storia dell’arte alla Sorbona. È docente alla La Fémis. Nel 1998 dopo aver realizzato il cortometraggio Les corps ouverts ha vinto il premio Jean Vigo come miglior regista. Tra i suoi film più noti Presque rien (2000), Wild Side (2004), Plein Sud (2009). Dopo Les invisibles (2012), selezionato al Festival di Cannes e premio César come miglior documentario, e Les vies de Thérèse (2017), presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, ha diretto vari documentari tra cui Adolescentes (2019), premiato al Festival di Locarno, Petite fille (2020), proiettato al Festival di Berlino, Casa Susanna (2022), selezionato alle Giornate degli Autori a Venezia e al Festival di Toronto, e Un jeune homme de bonne famille (2026).

Born in 1968, he is a French director and screenplayer. From 1987 to 1992 he studied at the École du Louvre, and has a BA from the Sorbonne in history of art. He teaches at La Fémis. In 1998 after had completed the short Open Bodies he won Jean Vigo prize as best director. Come Undone (2000), Wild Side (2004) and Going South (2009) are among his renowned films. After Les invisibles (2012), selected at Cannes Film Festival and César award for best documentary and The Lives of Thérèse (2017) presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, he directed some new documentaries, among which: Adolescents (2019), awarded at the Locarno Film Festival, Little Girl (2020), screened at the Berlin Film Festival, Casa Susanna (2022) selected for the Giornate degli Autori in Venice and at TIFF, and A Very Good Boy (2026).
