Nasce nel 1964 a Southampton, Canada, è regista, fotografo e scrittore. Si laurea in film studies alla York University di Toronto ed è inconfondibile voce della prima rivista queercore, J.D.s (di cui è fondatore insieme a G.B. Jones), alla fine degli Anni Ottanta. Il suo esordio al lungometraggio, No Skin Off My Ass, risale al 1991, seguìto da Super 8½ (1994) e Hustler White (1996). Proprio quest’ultimo costituisce la prima premiere europea di un suo film, alla Berlinale 1996, dando inizio così all’avventura festivaliera della sua carriera: a Rotterdam con Skin Flick nel 2000, a Locarno con The Raspberry Reich nel 2004, e a Venezia prima con Gerontophilia nel 2013 e poi con Saint-Narcisse nel 2020. È insignito di alcuni premi come il Premio della Giuria del Teddy Award a Berlino nel 2014 per Pierrot Lunaire e del Grand Prix Focus - Best Feature Film nel 2013 per Gerontophilia a Montréal, mentre l’ennesima consacrazione arriva nel 2025 con il Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts dal Canada Council for the Arts, uno dei premi canadesi più prestigiosi dedicati agli artisti.

He was born in 1964 in Southampton, Canada, and is a filmmaker, photographer, and writer. He graduated in film studies from York University in Toronto and became a distinctive voice of the early queercore magazine J.D.s (which he co-founded with G.B. Jones) in the late 1980s. His feature debut, No Skin Off My Ass, dates back to 1991, followed by Super 8½ (1994) and Hustler White (1996). It was precisely the latter that marked the first European premiere of one of his films, at the 1996 Berlinale, thus beginning his festival career: in Rotterdam with Skin Flick in 2000, in Locarno with The Raspberry Reich in 2004, and in Venice first with Gerontophilia in 2013 and later with Saint-Narcisse in 2020.
He has received several awards, including the Teddy Award Jury Prize in Berlin in 2014 for Pierrot Lunaire and the Grand Prix Focus – Best Feature Film in 2013 for Gerontophilia in Montréal. His latest major recognition came in 2025 with the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts from the Canada Council for the Arts, one of Canada’s most prestigious awards for artists.
