La giovane e squattrinata Anna scappa dalla transfobia del suo paese natale e si trasferisce dalla sorella per cercare un lavoro. Dopo una relazione fugace con un giovane vicino, Danny, Anna si innamora di Gen, una misteriosa tatuatrice che sente di conoscere da sempre. O forse effettivamente la conosce da sempre: sono entrambe streghe telepatiche, e dovranno unire le forze contro un misterioso demone scatenato da un tatuaggio magico.
Prodotto da Louise Weard, montato da Vera Drew, interpretato da Avalon Fast e diretto da Alice Maio Mackay, The Serpent’s Skin è un altro eccellente esemplare del New Trans Cinema che questa nuova wave di cinema queer sta costruendo in questi Anni Venti del 2000. Tra cinema indie e contemplazioni romantiche, Mackay canta le sorti delle due protagoniste in una storia affascinante di demoni e fantasmi, freschissima ed entusiasta, fatta di sesso, stati magici di catatonia e maledizioni serpentine.

Young and penniless Anna escapes transphobia in her hometown and moves in with her sister to find work. After a fleeting relationship with a young neighbor, Danny, Anna falls in love with Gen, a mysterious tattoo artist she feels she's known forever. Or maybe she has, in fact, known her forever: they are both telepathic witches, and must join forces against a mysterious demon unleashed by a magical tattoo.
Produced by Louise Weard, edited by Vera Drew, starring Avalon Fast, and directed by Alice Maio Mackay, The Serpent's Skin is another excellent example of the New Trans Cinema that this new wave of queer cinema is building in the 2020s. Between indie cinema and romantic contemplation, Mackay sings the fates of the two protagonists in a fascinating, fresh and enthusiastic story of demons and ghosts, filled with sex, magical states of catatonia and serpentine curses.

Nata nel 2004, è una regista australiana nota per la sua prolifica attività nel cinema horror queer indipendente. Ha iniziato a girare film da adolescente ad Adelaide, sviluppando rapidamente uno stile distintivo attraverso produzioni autodidatte a basso budget, fuori dall'industria cinematografica. Dopo aver abbandonato gli studi a 16 anni, si è dedicata interamente al cinema, scrivendo, dirigendo e producendo un gran numero di cortometraggi e lungometraggi. Il suo lavoro utilizza spesso le convenzioni dell'horror e del genere – vampiri, mostri ed elementi slasher – come metafore dell'identità trans, dell'alienazione e dell'esperienza queer, con una forte attenzione alla transfobia e alla violenza sistemica. Collabora regolarmente con cast e troupe queer e di genere non binario, promuovendo un modello di produzione fai-da-te e basato sulla comunità. Born in 2004, she is an Australian filmmaker known for her prolific work in independent queer horror cinema. She began making films as a teenager in Adelaide, quickly developing a distinctive voice through self-taught, low-budget productions outside traditional industry structures. After leaving formal education at 16, she focused entirely on filmmaking, writing, directing and producing a large number of shorts and feature films. Her work often uses horror and genre conventions – vampires, monsters and slasher elements – as metaphors for trans identity, alienation and queer experience, with a strong focus on transphobia and systemic violence. She regularly collaborates with queer and gender-diverse casts and crews, fostering a DIY, community-driven production model. Her early features include So Vam (2021), Bad Girl Boogey (2022), Satranic Panic and T Blockers (2023) and Carnage for Christmas (2024), establishing her as a prominent emerging voice in contemporary queer genre filmmaking.
