Un ritratto, sotto forma d’indagine, del maestro del melodramma, Douglas Sirk. La sua vita è stata il melodramma per eccellenza, a cui si sono ispirati tutti i suoi film. Attraverso le testimonianze delle persone a lui più vicine e i racconti inediti del diario della moglie, ci avviciniamo a quest'uomo circondato dal mistero. Scopriamo il suo mondo e la sua storia, segnata dalla speranza e dalla disillusione, dalla morte e, naturalmente, dall’amore.
Il documentario di Roman Hüben sceglie un taglio narrativo ad altezza d’uomo, esplorando il lavoro di Sirk a partire da un movimento che scandaglia gli effetti del più grande dolore della sua vita: la perdita del figlio Klaus.

An investigative portrait of the master of cinematic melodrama, Douglas Sirk. His life was the ultimate melodrama, from which all his films were inspired. Through the testimonies of those closest to him and the unpublished accounts in his wife's diary, we get closer to this man surrounded by mystery. We discover his world and his story, marked by hope and disillusionment, by death and, of course, by love.
Roman Hüben's documentary chooses a human-size narrative cut, exploring Sirk's work from a movement that plumbs the effects of the greatest sorrow of his life: the loss of his son Klaus.

Nato nel 1990 a Colonia, Germania. Cittadinanza tedesca. Cresciuto in Svizzera. Nel 2014 consegue una laurea in cinema presso l'ECAL (École Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne). Ha diretto diversi cortometraggi, tra cui I've Got a Power (2013) e Villa Ventura (2017). Douglas Sirk – Hope as in Despair (2022) è il suo primo lungometraggio documentario.

Born in 1990 in Cologne, Germany. German citizenship. Grows up in Switzerland. 2014 BA in Film from ECAL (École Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne). He has directed several short films, including I've Got a Power (2013) and Villa Ventura (2017). Douglas Sirk – Hope as in Despair (2022) is his first feature documentary.
