Diretto da Penelope Spheeris quando era studiava all'UCLA, I Don't Know fonde il desiderio di narrativa con un'energia spontanea e immediata. L'ascesa e la caduta della relazione tra Jimmy e Linda esplorano con franchezza le difficoltà legate all'identità di genere nei primi anni '70, quando la comunità queer riempiva le strade poco dopo Stonewall. In questo scenario di gioco di ruolo, il film offre un’occasione di sperimentazione: due amanti si incontrano nella sensuale e divertente intimità di una vasca da bagno, oppure si confessano i loro sentimenti. Per Jimmy, un film rappresenta l'opportunità di rivelare la sua vera natura, anche quella parte che non ha ancora scoperto, che ancora non conosce. Al di là del carisma, il legame più forte tra loro è il desiderio di vivere senza etichette.

Directed by Penelope Spheeris while she was a graduate student at UCLA, I Don’t Know fuses a longing for fiction with spontaneous, immediate energy. The rise and fall of Jimmy and Linda’s relationship candidly and playfully explores struggles with gender identity in the early 1970s, as the queer community filled the streets just a few years after Stonewall. In this role-play scenario, the film offers a haven for experimentation: two lovers meet in the intimacy of a bath – just as sensual as it is fun – or openly confess their feelings. For Jimmy, a film provides the chance to reveal a true nature – even the part they haven't yet discovered, they don't yet know. Beyond charisma, the strongest bond between these two lovers is the desire to live unlabeled.

Nata a New Orleans nel 1946, è una regista, produttrice e sceneggiatrice di spicco sia nel cinema indipendente che in quello commerciale negli Stati Uniti. Si è formata all'UCLA, dove ha diretto, tra gli altri cortometraggi, I Don’t Know (1970) e Hats Off to Hollywood (1972), il suo film di diploma. Ha fondato la casa di produzione di video musicali Rock 'n Reel. Ha raggiunto la notorietà con la trilogia The Decline of Western Civilization, che ritrae la scena punk e metal di Los Angeles con band come Black Flag e Motörhead. Il suo successo l'ha portata a dirigere Wayne's World (1992).

Born in New Orleans in 1946, she is a key director, producer and screenwriter in both independent and commercial cinema in the US. She trained at UCLA, where she directed, among other short films I Don’t Know (1970) and Hats Off to Hollywood (1972), her thesis project. She founded the music video production company Rock ‘n Reel. She achieved notoriety with The Decline of Western Civilization trilogy, portraying the punk and metal scene in Los Angeles with bands like Black Flag and Motörhead. Her success led her to direct Wayne's World (1992).
