«A volte, il mio corpo sembra quello di Marlon Brando in Un tram che si chiama Desiderio», mormora Jenni Olson, e in quella frase proietta la propria immagine sulla figura di un’icona omoerotica che il cinema ha elevato a mito: Brando, con la sua T-shirt sudata e la cintura di pelle che stringe i jeans, emana al tempo stesso vulnerabilità e una sensualità primordiale.
A partire da questa immagine iconica ed evocativa, Olson costruisce un autoritratto che funziona come un gioco di specchi: riecheggia gesti, imita posture e, in un unico movimento fluido, trascende i limiti del binarismo di genere. Sometimes si configura come un manifesto – una fantasia a tema butch – in cui la macchina da presa diventa uno strumento di esplorazione e il film si trasforma in un atto intimo di scoperta di sé.

“Sometimes, my body feels like Marlon Brando’s in A Streetcar Named Desire”, murmurs Jenni Olson, and in that phrase, she projects her own image onto the figure of a homoerotic icon whom cinema has elevated to myth: Brando, with his sweaty T-shirt and leather belt cinching his jeans, exudes both vulnerability and raw sensuality.
Drawing from this iconic and evocative image, Olson builds a self-portrait that acts as a game of mirrors: she echoes gestures, imitates postures, and, in one fluid movement, transcends the limits of binary gender roles. Sometimes emerges as a manifesto – a butch-themed fantasy – where the camera serves as a tool for exploration and the film becomes an intimate act of self-discovery.

È scrittrice, archivista, storica, consulente e regista di documentari, con sede a Berkeley, in California. I suoi due film-saggio – The Joy of Life (2005) e The Royal Road (2015) – sono stati presentati in anteprima al Sundance Film Festival e, come molti dei suoi cortometraggi, sono stati proiettati a livello internazionale, ricevendo premi e riconoscimenti. Il suo lavoro come regista e la sua vasta collezione personale di pellicole e cimeli cinematografici LGBTQ d'epoca sono conservati presso l'Harvard Film Archive. Tra i suoi numerosi riconoscimenti, le è stato conferito il prestigioso Special Teddy Award al Festival del Cinema di Berlino. In particolare, la sua riflessione sugli ultimi 30 anni di storia del cinema LGBTQ, contenuta in The Oxford Handbook of Queer Cinema, è stata pubblicata dalla Oxford University Press.

She is a writer, archivist, historian, consultant and non-fiction filmmaker based in Berkeley, California. Her two feature-length essay films – The Joy of Life (2005) and The Royal Road (2015) – premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and, like her many short films, have screened internationally, receiving awards and acclaim. Her work as a filmmaker and her expansive personal collection of vintage LGBTQ film prints and memorabilia are held by the Harvard Film Archive. Amongst her many honours she has been recognized with the prestigious Special Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Notably, her reflection on the last 30 years of LGBTQ film history, in The Oxford Handbook of Queer Cinema, was published by the Oxford University Press.
