Susana ha lasciato la sua casa di Mendoza, in Argentina, perché la sentiva troppo stretta. Se n'è andata per prendere le distanze dalle aspettative della sua famiglia. Ma chi è Susana? Cercando di raccontare e di essere raccontata, intervista i suoi genitori, sua sorella Graciela e due sue ex fidanzate, Talia e Karen. Sua madre la descrive come “una ragazzina testarda”. “Un'amante drammatica”, dice Talia. “Perché è cambiata così tanto?”, chiede la sorella. E così un apparente gesto narcisistico diventa qualcosa di viscerale. Susana si riprende e filma la sua testimonianza: “Ho scoperto la mia vocazione per l'arte e per le donne. Anche se ancora non sapevo cosa significassero le parole ‘lesbica’ o ‘omosessuale’”.
Susana è un film di incrollabile onestà. Tra le immagini della Bella Addormentata della Disney e le fotografie dell'album di famiglia – ereditate e costruite – si afferma come la figlia ribelle, la sorella irriverente e l'amante desiderosa.

Susana left her home in Mendoza, Argentina, because it felt too small for her. She also left to distance herself from her family’s expectations. But who is Susana? Seeking to narrate and be narrated, she interviews her parents, her sister Graciela, and two of her ex-girlfriends, Talia and Karen. Her mother describes her as “a stubborn little girl”. “A dramatic lover”, says Talia. “Why did she change so much?” demands her sister. What could be seen as a narcissistic gesture becomes something visceral. Susana turns the camera on herself to film her testimony: “I discovered my vocation for art and for women. Even though, at the time, I didn’t know what the words ‘lesbian’ or ‘homosexual’ meant.”
Susana is a film of unflinching honesty. Between the imagery of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and the photographs in the family album – both inherited and constructed – she affirms herself as the fractious daughter, the irreverent sister and the desiring lover.

Regista e artista nata in Argentina, dove ha vissuto fino al 1972, anno in cui, a 18 anni, si è trasferita in Israele per studiare pittura e fotografia alla Scuola di Belle Arti Bezalel di Gerusalemme. Ha lavorato come redattrice di telegiornali per la televisione israeliana e sette anni dopo si è trasferita negli Stati Uniti per proseguire gli studi al San Francisco Art Institute, dove ha diretto il cortometraggio Susana (1980). Nel corso della sua carriera, ha sviluppato un corpus di opere incentrato sui diritti umani e sulla memoria storica. Insieme a Lourdes Portillo, ha diretto Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo (1985) e La ofrenda (1989). Attualmente vive a Mendoza, in Argentina.

She is a director and artist. She was born in Argentina, where she lived until 1972, when at the age of 18 she moved to Israel to study painting and photography at the Bezalel School of Fine Arts in Jerusalem. She worked as a news editor for Israeli television and seven years later, she moved to the United States to pursue higher education at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she directed the short film Susana (1980). Throughout her career, she has developed a body of work committed to human rights and historical memory. Together with Lourdes Portillo, she directed Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo (1985) and La ofrenda (1989). Nowadays, she lives in Mendoza, Argentina.
