Louise Weard's cult debut, released after a laborious production, is a seemingly amateurish exercise that culminates in the most extreme and effective body horror. The first expression of a broader reflection on a "transgender form" of cinema, Computer Hearts is the Tetsuo of the internet age: in the movie the reclamation of identity and the post-human dehumanization seem inexorably and dangerously intertwined in an unstoppable vortex of erotic horror.

S.I.D.S. stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It's the title of one of Louise Weard's first short films, set entirely in a hotel room where a person (the Patient) is about to undergo an orchiectomy after discovering they’re pregnant. But due to a mysterious event, the doctor who's supposed to operate on them faints: something terrifying is about to happen.
With just a few elements, Louise Weard creates a small world-story in which the uncanny and the horrifying seem almost tangible. It's a film in which genre doesn't exist.

An interview with Z-movie director Vince D’Amato (director of Carmilla, the Lesbian Vampire aka Vampires vs Zombies) serves as an opportunity for a nostalgic reflection on video stores, on how the landscape of the home video world has changed, and on the importance it had in shaping the imagery of the underground scene.
For Louise Weard, it is also a dive into the past at one of the key moments in her career: her attendance at Vancouver’s Splatterfest and her meeting with director and special effects specialist Ryan Nicholson. Chasing Rewind is therefore an important piece for understanding Weard’s work, but regardless of that, it is also a small act of love for a world that no longer exists, and which those born before the 2000s still dream never truly ended.

In an unspecified neighborhood in Vancouver, Canada, film set technician Turner has a falling out with his girlfriend, the artist Brooklyn, when he begins to scroll his phone through incel ("involuntary celibacy") comments and poems on Reddit and 4chan. Communication between the two breaks down, and Turner begins to believe that the world (female, but not only) is conspiring against him. In another Vancouver neighborhood (or perhaps the same one), trans sex worker Michaela Sinclair, aka Traps, scrapes by as best as she can, torn between her job, her friendship with Adeline (who perhaps wants to detransition) and her toxic relationship with the abusive Christian.
The first film in Louise Weard's epic, ensemble story is one of the greatest surprises in contemporary queer cinema: raw, rough, sincere, it explores the privileges and risks of living in community, and the need to find the right balance between self-love and self-absorption.

A community (or perhaps a sect) of trans women, addicted to drugs, sex and collective rituals, lives secluded in a large basement, listening only to the voice of a mysterious computer and subsisting solely on hot dogs. Circle is an active member, but the strict rules prohibiting her from leaving the basement are starting to feel too restrictive. Perhaps it's time to get out and discover the world.
The extraordinary second installment of Louise Weard's Castration Movie Anthology is a dizzying odyssey through various stations, but it's also the tender and violent coming-of-age story of Circle, who strives to defend her identity and not be told what she should be. Perhaps Louise Weard's most venomous title, a fiery indictment of any ideological drift of queerness. But also her most romantic one, in an impossible cross between Lars von Trier and Richard Linklater.

Every day, Izzy wakes up and provides psychological counseling over the phone, trying to find the strength to cope with the drama and burdens of others. Trent, her partner, is a laid-back skater who helps her with the housework. One evening, however, Trent confides to Izzy something she never suspected: her gender identity is female, she wants to be called Tiffany, and she intends to begin the process of transitioning.
It might seem cynical and counterproductive to talk about individual freedom by taking the uncomfortable position of those who don't understand that freedom and would like to deny it, but Louise Weard finds in the eyes of Avalon Fast, who plays Izzy here, the right mix of pathos and selfishness to make her a multifaceted character, partly understandable and partly disturbing, with which to sketch a satire of the world of relationships in the age of queerness, touching on contradictions that are difficult but essential to listen to.

Young and penniless Anna escapes transphobia in her hometown and moves in with her sister to find work. After a fleeting relationship with a young neighbor, Danny, Anna falls in love with Gen, a mysterious tattoo artist she feels she's known forever. Or maybe she has, in fact, known her forever: they are both telepathic witches, and must join forces against a mysterious demon unleashed by a magical tattoo.
Produced by Louise Weard, edited by Vera Drew, starring Avalon Fast, and directed by Alice Maio Mackay, The Serpent's Skin is another excellent example of the New Trans Cinema that this new wave of queer cinema is building in the 2020s. Between indie cinema and romantic contemplation, Mackay sings the fates of the two protagonists in a fascinating, fresh and enthusiastic story of demons and ghosts, filled with sex, magical states of catatonia and serpentine curses.
